Things I think I think from the Phenom National Showcase

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – With two full days of basketball now in the books here in the great state of North Carolina, I wanted to empty my mental notes from the Phenom Hoops National Showcase.

The 22 Feet Academy win over Oak Hill Academy fit right into the theme of what we have seen with college basketball’s opening weekend – anyone can win at any time. This game set the bar for the most exciting game of the year for me. What a way to start a season.

Eli Wright was the absolute difference maker in the second half for 22 Feet Academy. Down by as many as 18 points, the future Mississippi State Bulldog put his team on his back and went to work. And the thing is – everyone in the gym could see it coming. Wright wouldn’t be denied. He picked apart the guards of Oak Hill.

Braxton Key, the Alabama signee, was the most versatile player in the event.

Tennessee may not be in the top 25 recruiting rankings for the class of 2016 as a class but understand this – John Fulkerson and Grant Williams are major motor guys. The two incoming forwards are bulls in a china shop. Dear trainers in Knoxville, get the ice packs in the freezer. You’re going to use them a lot on them, and everyone else on the team. Practices will be intense.

Juwan Gary might be the best long-term prospect that I saw all weekend in Winston-Salem. The class of 2019 prospect from South Carolina has the size (6-6), skill and bounce to be a terrific prospect.

Tripp Greene of Forsyth Country Day School may have hit the biggest shots of anyone in the two-day event. The sophomore hit a tying three-pointer from four feet behind the three-point line. The next possession he ran an almost identical play and drilled the game-winner. Stones, man. Stones.

I love the way Greensboro Day (NC) passes. They fire rockets to their destination. And boy do the talk on defense. Fun team to watch.

Very intrigued by Jordan Bowden of 22 Feet Academy. The 6-foot-5 native of Tennessee could be a real sleeper in 2016.

Hill Academy (CAN) point guard Godwin Boahen will be a player that coaches will ask “is he big enough” or “is he really a point guard” but then watch him beat their team in college. Put the concerns to the side and recruit the unsigned senior. Total gamer.

Miguel Priest of Legacy Charter (SC) was really fun to watch. The 6-foot-5 forward just gets things done. Liked what I saw from the unsigned senior from Detroit. (Pictured above)

Patience is required for 2017 forward Nicholas Claxton of Legacy Charter. His ceiling is incredibly high but the walls are still being built up to the roof line.

Mountain Mission (VA) point guard Symon Walczak was really good. The 6-foot-3 guard knows how to play. Nice sleeper for mid-level schools to mess around with.

Northside Christian (NC) sophomore Nate Hinton hits jumpers. Lots and lots of jumpers. The 6-foot-3 guard was the most consistent jump shooter at the event.

Corey Evans told me Lindell Wiggington may just be the best guard on Oak Hill’s roster. Corey may just be right.

I don’t like heaping too much praise on young players but I don’t shy away from acknowledging competitors. Devon Dotson, the talented sophomore point guard from Providence Day (NC), is a prize fighter. Love that.

Man, I hate seeing Harry Giles in street clothes on the Oak Hill bench. Here’s a speedy and successful recovery, young fella.
