Roundtable: Which school has to play catch-up?
With the early signing period now in the books, we wanted to run through the important questions with our HoopSeen.com staff. What school has to play catch up the most until the late signing period comes in April?
Carter Wilson: The ACC is becoming the most competitive conference when it comes to basketball recruiting. After missing out on Bam Adebayo, I feel like NC State has to make something happen in April to keep up with the heavy hitters in the ACC. Rawle Alkins is now in the Wolfpack’s back yard at Word of God and will be the main priority. They will also be after Quality Education (NC) wing Deshawn Corprew, who recently decommited from Arkansas-Little Rock.
Garrett Tucker: Kansas and Arizona will be the popular answers across the country and both of those programs have some work to do, but it is imperative for Shaka Smart to make a couple of splashes at Texas going forward. The Longhorns already have a solid start with James Banks and Jacob Young in the mix, but where do they go from there?
Right next door, of course. Smart and his staff have made Austin native Jarrett Allen a priority since day 1. There are a lot of questions regarding Allen’s recruitment right now. At some point over the past month, people in the industry believe that Kansas, Kentucky, and Houston have led for the five-star big man’s services. With that being said, it looks like this recruitment could be a toss-up going forward.
Texas is also right in the mix for combo guard Andrew Jones, who is from nearby Irving, Texas. If Smart can reel in either of these prospects, the Longhorns’ class could make a big jump in the 2016 Team Rankings.
Corey Evans: Sure, Kansas and Arizona only hold one commitment at the current moment but in hindsight, the Jayhawks are playing without Cheick Diallo and still have the chance to cut down the nets in April and with it, there aren’t many potential non-seniors that could leave this year so the holes aren’t as great. Alongside KU, Arizona loses Kaleb Tarczewski and Ryan Anderson but the loaded freshman crop that they brought in this fall doesn’t jump out with potential one-and-done types. While each program does need to add at least one or two more during the late signing period, I am going to go with Texas.
The Longhorns have five seniors on its roster and all five are key contributors. Throw in junior guard Isaiah Taylor, a talented floor general who could definitely leave for the NBA after this season, and the necessity for further talent across the board is definitely a need next year in Austin. Shaka Smart and his staff has nailed down two top-100 guys with Jacob Young and James Banks, but that isn’t enough, especially with the culture that the new regime is attempting to implant at UT. Luckily, Texas is heavily involved for in-state recruits Jarrett Allen and Andrew Jones and while the getting both would be great, it seems that at least one is a must.
Justin Young: Everyone not named Kentucky, Duke or Michigan State. These three power programs reeled in some major talent and fit the style of play that is currently in place. You can project all three of these teams as March darlings. That’s no surprise. But what about programs like Kansas and Arizona? Neither program has made a splash…yet…in the class of 2016. A guy like Josh Jackson, the No. 2 overall player in the class, could shake things up for either program.
