3@3: The best of Augusta, Clayton, Private Schools

Welcome to the 2015-2016 season in the state of Georgia. The March to Macon has officially begun and we couldn’t be more excited to get things rolling here in the Peach State. Every day for the next couple of weeks we will tackle three questions at 3 p.m. about the upcoming season.

Justin Young and Carter Wilson will jump right into the conversation about the best teams, best players, best games and much more as the opening tip looms around the corner.

Have a question? Please use #AskHoopSeen and our guys will be sure to tackle your questions along the way!

The top team in Augusta this year is…?

Laney. This year’s Laney team will look a little bit different from a year ago, with three key seniors departing in JaShawn Brooks, Jaylen Taylor, and Jervon Walker, guard Colin Young transferring to Miller Grove, and head coach Buck Harris taking the job at Baldwin County. However, the backcourt of College of Charleston commit Zep Jasper and Charleston Southern commit Christian Keeling, who will be one of the better backcourts in the state. - Carter Wilson

When Buck Harris left Laney for Baldwin County this summer, I’ve been watching the city’s hoops landscape closely. You get the feeling there is about to be a shift in power in East Georgia. Laney will be talented, no doubt, but I think we’re looking at Richmond Academy as a program that could be tops in Augusta. Head coach Steve Nobles is no stranger to the post-season landscape in the Peach. Madison Williams, an Illinois State commitment, is now at ARC alongside 6-foot-6 forward Nick Roberts. The Musketeers were a .500 club last year but the team returns a good number of players from last year’s team. - Justin Young

The top team in Clayton County this year is…?

Jonesboro. While the Cardinals lost a lot of players from last year’s state championship team, they still bring back some key guys and a hard nosed style that they have become accustomed to playing under Dan Maehlman. MJ Walker will again be one of the state’s best scorers and they will have other players take on bigger roles and make a name for themselves. One of those guys will be forward Jamari Smith. - CW

Agree with you on this one, Carter. Jonesboro lost a lot, no doubt, but MJ Walker has as good of a travel season as anyone from Georgia this year. Smith could be in line for a breakout season. The Cardinals always have someone that shoots their way or defends their way into the conversation. - JY

The top private school team in GA this year is…?

Greenforest. This is the only team that rivals Shiloh in terms of Division I prospects, with at least seven. Greenforest has a well-balanced team with good guard play led by John Ogwuche and Justin Forrest and a frontcourt that has size good enough for the college level with players like shot blocking machine Ikey Obiagu and Victor Enoh. They will be hungry for a title in A-Private and could be out to prove they are among the state’s best teams regardless of classification. -CW

Hard to argue with you on this, Carter. So, I’m going to go for the second best private school. How’s that? Pace Academy and St. Francis are neck and neck. Both teams boast the top player in the junior (Pace’s Wendell Carter) and senior (St. Francis’s Kobi Simmons) in the state. Both are legit candidates for Mr. Georgia Basketball and state championship contenders. Let’s not forget about Greater Atlanta Christian, either. Yes, Eddie Martin is now coaching at Buford but the talent remains for the Spartans still. St. Pius X will X and O you all day and Stratford Academy in Macon should surprise people this year. - JY
