2015 Holiday Hoopsgiving preview

Thanksgiving Week might be known by most as a time to give thanks, watch some NFL football, or get some great shopping deals. But for the hoop heads community, it is a week to get out and see some basketball at a number of great showcases around the country.

One of those showcases is the Holiday Hoopsgiving Tournament at Holy Innocents Episcopal School in Atlanta.

Last year, in the event’s inaugural year, Hoopsgiving had a number of great teams and players showcase their talents and provided an excellent basketball platform. This year, tournament director Chris Williams has built on last year and put together a field of teams that rivals any other event in the nation for the event's second year.

Here are a few things to look at with this year’s Holiday Hoopsgiving:

Top Players:

Martins Igbanu (Covenant Christian/Tulsa), Udoka Azubuike  (Potter’s House, #12 Class of 2016), Jared Jones (Potter’s House), Jared Harper (Pebblebrook/Auburn), Ikey Obiagu (Greenforest, #11 Class of 2017), Victor Enoh (Greenforest), Jordan Lyons (McIntosh/Furman), Brandon Robinson (Douglas County/North Carolina), Chuma Okeke (Westlake, #47 Class of 2017), Jamie Lewis (Westlake), Emmitt Williams (IMG Academy), Drue Drinnon (East Jackson), Koby McEwan (Wasatch Academy/Utah State), Eli Wright (22 Feet Academy/Mississippi State), Sedee Keita (22 Feet Academy/South Carolina), RayShaun Hammonds (Norcross), Wendell Carter (Pace Academy, #1 Class of 2017), Isaiah Kelly (Pace Academy), Elias Harden (Sandy Creek)

Matchups to Watch:

Covenant Christian (GA) vs. Potter’s House (FL), Friday: Literally a heavyweight matchup, pitting Potter’s House powerhouse center Udoka Azubuike (6-foot-10, 280 lbs.) and Covenant Christian’s frontline of Martins Igbanu, a Tulsa commit, and Chris Agbo (6-foot-8, 260 lbs.). Also, remember the name of Potter’s House freshman forward Jared Jones, as it will be a name you hear a lot of over the next few years.

Pebblebrook (GA) vs. Greenforest (GA): A game of opposites. Pebblebrook claims one of the best backcourts in the state while Greenforest has one of the biggest frontlines around. How will Pebblebrook contend with Greenforest’s size? And will Greenforest be able to slow down the Pebblebrook guards, particularly Auburn commit Jared Harper, who has started the year on a scoring tear?

Pace Academy (GA) vs. Westlake (GA), Saturday: This is a matchup between Georgia’s most talented player, Wendell Carter, and perhaps Georgia’s most talented team, Westlake. Westlake’s frontcourt of Chuma Okeke, Ronald Bell, and Mike Durr has had a great start to the season, but will they be able to slow down 2017’s top player, Wendell Carter, and his frontcourt mate Isaiah Kelly? This should be one of the best games all year between Georgia teams.

Theme to Watch: Size, size and more size. It is rare to get an event that’s loaded with this kind of talent. It’s even more rare to get one that features the size that this event has. Think about the amount of big men that are in this event. The centers include Ikey Obiagu & Udoka Azubuike, two of the top centers in their classes, as well as Mike Durr. Then the power forwards include Wendell Carter, Sedee Keita, Martins Igbanu, Emmitt Williams, Jared Jones, & Dishon Lowery. Watching the frontcourts at Holiday Hoopsgiving will be a treat for anyone in attendance.
