20 thoughts about GA HS Hoops as we start the season

Welcome to the 2015-2016 high school season here in the great state of Georgia. I’ve been thinking long and hard about the months ahead. If you aren’t excited for this team of year and the march to Macon, well it might just be time to find a new website to check out.

I kid.

Well, kind of.

Here are 20 thoughts as we go into the Georgia high school basketball season.

1. I really have no idea on who the top team is in the state of Georgia. No clue. The talent is spread thin across the board. That said, here’s who I think will win state

2. AAAAAA: Shiloh

3. AAAAA: Miller Grove

4. AAAA: Jonesboro

5. AAA: No clue. This is the most wide-open classification in the state.

6. AA: Pace Academy

7. Private A: Greenforest Christian

8. Public A: Wilkinson County

9. I think Alterique Gilbert will be Mr. Georgia Basketball.

10. How about this stretch of insanity? Shiloh will play only two home games in January. And zero home games from Dec. 12 to Jan. 23. How will the Generals fortify their record during that stretch?

11. Transfers have taken over our great state. That’s not secret. But I’ll say this: If you’re good enough, you’re good enough. Golden State was terrible before a baby-faced kid was drafted.

12.  I can’t wait to see Wendell Carter and Pace go head-to-head with Ikey Obiagu and Greenforest on Dec. 5 at Wheeler High School at the Basketball Explosion event. Rarely, if ever, do you have these kinds of match-ups in Georgia high school basketball. Heck, high school basketball in general. The last true clash of the titans was Dwight Howard and Randolph Morris. That was 12 seasons ago. Twelve.

13.  With Malik Beasley and Kaiser Gates now gone from St. Francis, I’m very interested in seeing Kobi Simmons this season at the Alpharetta private school. Big expectations for the returning Class A Private state champs.

14.  Yes, I made my predictions for state champs above, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see a number of non-Atlanta teams make an aggressive march towards Macon.

15.  This is your last chance to get to South Georgia and watch Bainbridge and Seminole County play. And I mean Tyree Crump and Jordan Harris play each other. The cousins will suit up in Athens next year for Mark Fox.

16.  The best place to watch a basketball in Georgia is The Palace at Wilkinson County. One of my most favorite spots in all of HS hoops. Vidalia is a close second.

17.  To that end, just get out to games. I went to too many gyms that were at half capacity last season.

18.  I think these guys are all due for a big breakout season: Lance Thomas (Norcross), Brian Thomas (Kell), Rashon Williams (Calhoun County), Phlan Fleming (Cedar Shoals), Dominique Walker (Glynn Academy), JD Notae (Newton), Isaiah Banks (Heritage) and Jordan Willis (Thomasville). And by breakout, I mean two things: known more outside of their geographic region and much more production for their team.

19.  The class of 2017 could be as deep as the 2008 bunch for college prospects. There were 63 Division I signees in 2098 from Georgia straight out of high school. This current junior class could have upwards of 70. That would be the most over the last 15 years.

20.  I’ve covered the state of Georgia for over a decade and going into the season, I’ve never seen so many outlets and writers covering this state. And that’s a terrific thing.
