2@2: Who is the best shooter in Alabama?

Welcome to the 2015-16 season in the state of Alabama. The road to Birmingham has officially begun and we couldn’t be more excited to get things rolling. Every day for the next few weeks, our Alabama expert Garrett Tucker will tackle two questions at 2 p.m. CST about the upcoming season.

Who is the best shooter in Alabama?

The ability to shoot the basketball will take you a long way in basketball. However, shooting has taken a backseat to athleticism and high-flying dunks in amateur basketball. There both great, but remember, a dunk is two points and a shot behind the arc is three points. Reigning NBA Most Valuable Player Steph Curry knows a little bit about that concept, right?

Alabama has some impressive shooters, but two names came to mind when the question was first asked: Cold Springs’s Triston Chambers and Huffman’s Myreon Jones, Jr. (pictured above).

Chambers, who will sign with Samford next week, burst onto the scene a few years ago with his shooting ability. However, he also proved he isn’t just a shooter, as he has some sneaky athleticism that allows him to finish at the rim. When left open, it’s usually a guarantee that Chambers will sink a shot. The hard part is, he is accurate with his shot when someone is guarding him. The 6-foot-2 guard has become one of the best players at creating shots for himself. On a 2A state title contending Cold Springs squad, open shots won’t come easy for Chambers. Expect him to make some noise at the next level at Samford with his long range.

Myreon Jones, Jr., a 2018 combo guard at Huffman, announced his arrival to the state during the spring with his shooting. The sophomore was one of the best shooters at the Alabama Elite Preview in March, and it carried over into the travel season with the Birmingham Storm Elite. Each time out, he consistently knocks down shots. Jones really raised some eyebrows after dropping seven 3s during a summer playdate against Mountain Brook. His consistency and smooth stroke make him an easy addition to this list. Watch out for Jones this high school season. He’s a player that could really emerge.

Who is the best shot-blocker in Alabama?

The easy choice here is 2017 center Austin Wiley. The Auburn commit made his name early in his career with his shot-blocking and rim-protecting. That’s one of the many reasons why Auburn, Alabama, Duke, North Carolina, and so on had them atop their lists in the 2017 class. However, some other talented guys need to be highlighted here.

Right behind Wiley is 2016 Tuscaloosa (AL) Northridge jumping jack Sha’Markus Kennedy. The 6-foot-7 power forward plays on a pogo stick around the rim. He did a great job of protecting the rim for Southeast Elite at #Gibbons in May. It will be interesting to see where his recruitment goes, as he has committed to Chipola (FL) JC.

2017 Ramsay (AL) power forward Kobe McClain may be one of the South’s best kept secrets to this point. The 6-foot-8 big man is also an anchor at the rim, as he did a great job of protecting the basket for Ramsay during the high school season last year, as well as on the travel circuit with the Alabama Magic. Not only is he a great shot-blocker, but he is a great defender in general. McClain has the ability to guard the opposing team’s best player on a daily basis. He is another breakout guy to keep track of this high school season.

2017 Faith Academy (AL) power forward Reginald Mhoon may be a little undersized, but he makes up for it with his wingspan and jumping. He is also a no-brainer to this list. The high-energy big man will help set the tone for Faith Academy as they look to make it back to Birmingham for another Final 48 run.
