2@2: The best teams in Huntsville and Montgomery

Welcome to the 2015-16 season in the state of Alabama. The road to Birmingham has officially begun and we couldn’t be more excited to get things rolling. Every day for the next few weeks, our Alabama expert Garrett Tucker will tackle two questions at 2 p.m. CST about the upcoming season.

Who is the best team in Huntsville?

Last year, the Huntsville area had five teams playing in state championship games: Lee-Huntsville, J.O. Johnson, Westminister Christian, West Limestone, and Madison Academy. It should be another big year for teams in the Rocket City in Birmingham, but who exactly is the best overall team the city has to offer?

J.O. Johnson, Lee-Huntsville, and Madison Academy are all top-notch programs. They have a nice combination of top players and coaches in the state and all three will compete for championships in their respective classes. With that being said, they have to be the teams at play here.

At this point in the season, I will go with Madison Academy. The Mustangs return all five starters from last year’s 3A state championship team. Josh Langford (Sr.), Will Acuff (Sr.), Austin Troxell (Jr.), Myles Parker (Jr.), and KeKe Matthews (Jr.) will all be major contributors for Andy Blackston’s team this season. It will take some time for the team to be clicking on all cylinders because of football, but by December, the Mustangs should be in their prime.

Last year, J.O. Johnson emerged as the best team in Huntsville and possibly the best team in the state. They have the same potential this season, as they one lose one starter from last year’s team in Terrion's Bone. Samford commit Justin Hopkins (Sr.), five-star John Petty (Jr.), and Devonta Lanier (Jr.) will be familiar faces for the Jaguars this year. However, Jack Doss will be missing several bench players from last year’s 5A state championship team. The Jaguars will be young and it could take some time, but they will definitely be one of the top teams in Huntsville this season.

Lee-Huntsville will be an interesting team to watch early in the season. As usual, the Generals will play a national schedule and compete against some of the best talent in the country. They lose their best player from last year’s team in Gerron Scissum, but the other four starters return. Tracey Burnett (Sr.), Evan Wiley (Sr.), Ashton Ray (Sr.), and Malik Burnett (Jr.) will play big minutes, as will sixth man Kendrick Ashby (Sr.). Of the three teams, Lee may be the deepest.

There will be several opportunities this season for this question to be played out on the court. Lee and Johnson will meet at the end of January, and Johnson and Madison Academy will also match up during the season. They will all have a chance to compete in the Huntsville Times Classic, too. Who’s the best team? It’s a toss-up right now, but it’s safe to say all three schools will be in the hunt for state championships.

Who is the best team in Montgomery?

Carver-Montgomery is one of the most talented teams in the state on paper. Despite losing two SEC players in Brandon Austin (Alabama) and Joseph Strugg (Mississippi State), Carver is expected to be the top team from the state’s capital this year. While they do lose some top-tier talent, they also reload and return plenty of players.

Troy commit Darian Adams (Sr.) will fill some big shoes and could be the Wolverines best player heading into the season. Carleton Williams (Sr.), who transferred in from Chicago last year, is expected to have a breakthrough year. He could earn a lot of attention in his recruitment and emerge as a sleeper prospect. Jamal Turner (Jr.) could be one of the most entertaining players in the state with his uber-athleticism and high-flying dunks. He will pose problems for opposing teams.

As of right now, it looks like Lee-Huntsville and Carver-Montgomery are on track for a rematch of last year’s 6A state championship game.
