Jaren Jackson creates his own path
It is a who’s who of those who have offered Jaren Jackson Jr. thus far. If you’re a top notch program in the Midwest, you’ve probably already dished out a scholarship to the Park Tudor big man. Whether it is Illinois, Indiana, Butler, Purdue, Xavier, Michigan State, or Notre Dame, you have already thrown your hat into the mix for the high upside forward in 2017. However, it seems things are just beginning for the 6-foot-9 rising star out of the Indianapolis area.
If the name Jaren Jackson rings a bell, well, it should. His father formerly starred at Georgetown in the late 1980s before going onto a 13-year NBA career. Now following in his father’s footsteps, the junior big man is a taller by a good five inches and has the chance to be as good as he might want to be.
With a 7-foot-3 wingspan and size 17-feet, Jackson might not be doing growing yet as he just turned 16 years old last month. His potential is through the roof as he can hit the 3 off the pick and pop and is a menace on the defensive end as he acts as a rim protector and is capable of blocking shots with either hand and out of the weakside, can move his feet and defend away from the basket, and has the agility and motor in finishing on the break.
While he can oftentimes float to the perimeter, the budding skillset from Jackson is marvelous. He has deceptive handles on the breakdown, can slice and finish with the off-handed dunk at the rim, and is very engaged and active on the offensive glass. Throw in his quality set of academics and bloodlines, and there isn’t much that you have to argue with in imagining what might be in store for the junior big man.
While still a bit of time before any sort of dwindled list is made or a commitment occurs, Jackson does understand what he is looking for in a school. “A mixture of a good academic school and a good basketball program. In general, a good fit.”
With a visit looming to Indiana on Tuesday, October 6, and heading to Michigan this coming Saturday, October 10, Jackson is just beginning to see a priority recruitment and there doesn’t seem to be an end in sight with those in pursuing the high ceiling junior out of the Park Tudor School.
