Indy Top 80: Top Performers
Phenom Hoops rolled out the Indy Top 80 event on Saturday at Lawrence Central High School in Indianapolis and with it, some of the best and brightest from the Indiana high schools ranks entered the doors at the polished gymnasium. There were already college commitment that laced up their shoes, others who are nationally recognized recruits, and also a bunch of unknowns that broke out due to their play and production. However, no one had a better day than the likes of Desmond Bane, Eugene German, Kris Wilkes, Austin Boucher, and Sydney Curry.
Desmond Bane, SG/SF, Seton Catholic High School, 2016: Easily the breakout of the event in Indy, the 6-foot-5 wing threw down the dunk of the event where the quality built and active senior flew to the basket for throw downs on numerous occasions but he is more than just an athlete. Built like a linebacker, Bane is a highly impressive passer of the basketball, especially below the arc and on the drive to the basket, as the Indiana native found open teammates on kick-out dishes. He can shoot the ball with his feet set, is engaged and active in guarding the basketball, and fully qualitied for next year but with a lone division-1 offer in hand from Air Force, that could all change in the coming weeks where Bane has the tools to contribute within the highest platform of play.
Eugene German, CG, 21st Century Charter, 2016: Talk about a playmaker. German, who is committed to Northern Illinois, had a great few hours in Indianapolis, as the long-armed and engaging guard plays both ends of the floor without much of an issue. He does have to solidify his outside jump shot but it is his finishing skills at the basket, production in the open floor, and plays in the passing lanes along with his quick hands that allow for the Gary, Indiana, native in coming up with a plethora of steals in any given contest. The MAC program found itself a quality steal in the 2016 class and German looks to be someone who will leave an imprint at NIU from day one due to his two-way capabilities and large talent base.
Kris Wilkes, F, North Central High School, 2017: Long. Athletic. Explosive. Instinctive. Versatile. There isn’t much on the long-term that you can ever want more from a guy like Kris Wilkes. He is always involved on the floor and isn’t afraid to do even the dirtiest of tasks, as long as it means inching him and his squad closer to the win. Sure, the Indiana native’s outside jumper could be a bit more consistent but that shouldn’t take away from how productive he seems to always be, is capable of defending various spots on the floor, and has some of the best potential of any forward in the 2017 recruiting class.
Austin Boucher, PG, Fort Wayne South High School, 2018: Toughness meets playmaking abilities with Austin Boucher. Graced with super long arms, innate toughness, and some flair on the floor, the upside from the Fort Wayne native is more than promising. He can score the ball at all three levels with a consistent jumper and displayed the movability in being used off the ball. Boucher is still best with the rock in his hands where he reads and reacts appropriately with what the defense gives, makes others better in the backcourt, and when all might fail, will look to throw one down on you at the basket. With quality grades and a soon to be quality college recruitment, Boucher will head off to Michigan this Saturday and also take in Indiana’s Hoosier Hysteria at the end of the month.
Sydney Curry, PF, Bishop Luers High School, 2019: Although a bit of an undersized post at this time, Curry might not be done growing as the 6-foot-6 forward shows off size 17 feet, giant hands, and parents that both stand over 6-feet tall. Regardless, the freshman big man is very productive where he has super soft hands around the basket, already understands how to use his body and strength in scoring through contact at the lid, and has a go-to turnaround jumper that he can hit out to 12-feet and with a hand in his face. The lefty runs the floor and while he isn’t the most athletic of guys around, seems to come up with his fair share of rebounds and loose balls due to just how well he gets positioning within the interior. A quality recruit with further potential in the post, Sydney Curry is a name to know throughout the Midwest in 2019 and is already hearing from the likes of Indiana, Xavier, Purdue, and UCLA.
