Indy Top 80: Top Forwards
Phenom Hoops rolled out the Indy Top 80 event on Saturday at Lawrence Central High School in Indianapolis and with it, some of the best and brightest from the Indiana high schools ranks entered the doors at the polished gymnasium. There were already college commitment that laced up their shoes, others who are nationally recognized recruits, and also a bunch of unknowns that broke out due to their play and production. In the frontcourt, it was Joey Brunk, Parker Hazen, Jaren Jackson, Gavin Bizeau, and Aaron Henry that all shined in Indy.
Joey Brunk, C, Southport High School, 2016: The future Butler Bulldog had a solid showing in Indianapolis on Saturday as Joey Brunk is in your throwback 5-man variety where he sits down the in the post and can score over either shoulder in the lane. He has gotten a lot more mobile over these past few months and because of it, was capable of scoring on a few runouts. He has a solid motor and seems to buy into his strengths as an interior presence and should be able to give Christ Holtmann early minutes at the Big East program come next winter.
Parker Hazen, F, Columbia City High School, 2017: The younger brother of Brachen Hazen, a recent commit to Central Florida, the junior showed a bevy of versatility and upside as a combo forward-type. He can handle the ball on the breakdown and has good end to end speed where he can lead the break appropriately. Toughness isn’t lacking out of the 6-foot-7 forward as the long junior doesn’t shy away from contact on the attempted score at the basket and uses his length well to get the line on his man off the first step. His outside jumper isn’t too shabby either and where he does need to add consistency to it, Hazen displays the ability to play either spot in the frontcourt and the energy in remaining involved on both ends of the floor. With an offer from Ball State and IUPUI, Hazen is on the cusp of bigger offers and could see those roll in as he develops his ball skills and jumper even further.
Jaren Jackson Jr., PF, Park Tudor School, 2017: The son of a former Georgetown star, Jaren Jackson showed vast potential on the floor at Lawrence Central over the weekend. With superior length, agility, and a quality motor, Jackson plays each possession hard and shows deceptive ball skills off the face-up. He can play a bit too much on the perimeter but the 6-foot-9 forward can hit the outside jumper with his feet set and is capable of finishing at the basket with his off-hand. However, the Park Tudor big man’s greatest value comes on the defensive end where he can guard the ball screen appropriately, recovers nicely on plays, and acts as a solid rim protector, showing immense upside for Jackson to be a top tier recruit in the 2017 class and a guy that has his best ball ahead of him.
Gavin Bizeau, PF, Plainfield High School, 2018: With a long and lanky body type, adding some strength and filling out much further is a need for Bizeau. However, the competitive sophomore is always involved and is very versatile due to his agility and light body type. He can defend away from the basket, made for a few transition shot blocks, and also made for solid catch and goes with the basketball off the catch. The upside is clearly there with Bizeau, and though he is far off from becoming a finish product, Bizeau sports the energy, length, and potential to be a solid college recruit in the coming years.
Aaron Henry, SF, Ben Davis High School, 2018: A well-built and physical wing, Henry is a brute force on the attack to the basket and doesn’t shy away from the body at the lid. He can handle the ball a bit on the face-up and attack and seems to find himself in open spots off the ball for the catch and shoot jumper. The sophomore wing can knock down the open jumper with his feet but is best with the ball in his hands where he can make the appropriate pass off the drive to the basket and looks to be someone to watch in the coming years out Ben Davis High in 2018.
