Fastbreak Friday
We are back and at it this week with a full list of visitors hitting the road these next few days for Midnight Madness festivities, football games, and/or official visits. Whatever the situation, Fastbreak Friday attempts to bring you the most in-depth rundown on where the top recruits are headed along with zeroing in on potential commitments that could occur and also taking a look at two giant weekend’s at Duke and Kentucky.
BIG BLUE MADNESS BRINGS IN THE TROOPS
Every year, Kentucky rolls out the red carpet for the rapper Drake, its respective roster, and more importantly, a boatload of recruits that are on hand for the night of festivities. This year is no different as John Calipari and his coaching staff will showcase its top-five ranked team in front of a sold out crowd at Rupp Arena, and will also play host to some of the best high school prospects nationally.
Sacha Killeya-Jones, an already committed Wildcat, will be on campus in Lexington as he attempts to lure others in joining him next fall at the SEC institution. The stardom will be robust these next few days led by elite big man and top ranked prospect Harry Giles. The Wildcats are fighting off the likes of UNC, Wake Forest, and Kansas for him but will have to go head-to-toe with Coach K and his gang in Durham if they hope to beat Duke for him.
Another top-five ranked prospect will be in town as De’Aaron Fox will be hosted by the Wildcat faithful. It looks like Kentucky stands the best shot at landing the Texas native compared to anyone else on campus this weekend and a commitment could be in sight; Kansas looms as the other potential home for the cat quick, lefty guard.
Remaining in the top-10 of the rankings, Malik Monk leaves his Bentonville home in Arkansas and heads to Lexington. The 6-foot-3 playmaker is an elite athlete with a giant penchant for throwing up large numbers on the scoreboard. After visiting Kansas last weekend for Late Night at the Phog, it looks as if Kentucky may be in the lead here, though they continue to battle KU, Oregon, and Arkansas for him.
While the talent on hand in the senior class is nothing to laugh at, the young crop heading to UK is also strong where Trae Young, a 2017 guard from Oklahoma, hits Big Blue Madness. His recruitment is all over the place as he carries offers from the top programs from coast to coast and after visiting Kansas last weekend, Kentucky will do its best in displaying what they can offer the killer lead guard. Along with him, Kris Wilkes, a 6-footo-7 jumping jack from Indianapolis, takes in the festivities and so will Darius Garland, a prolific shooter of the basketball in the 2018 class from the Nashville area.
COUNTDOWN TO CRAZINESS IS A GO
While there is star power in Lexington, the same can be said for the activities in Durham. Duke will roll out the red carpet for its Midnight Madness festivities and with its two committed forwards set to be on hand with Jayson Tatum and Javin DeLaurier, the Cameron Crazies will display an outpouring of support for some of the young recruits that are setting foot on the ACC program’s campus.
While the top dog in the 2016 class will be at Kentucky, the top dog in the 2017 class will be at Duke as Wendell Carter hits the defending national champion’s campus. A native of Georgia, the Blue Devils are the perceived leaders for the big man’s talents in two years and while a commitment might not be had for a while, this weekend could go a long way in furthering its standing as the figurehead for Carter’s signature come November, 2016.
Two high school teammates will be on campus as Apple Valley stars Gary Trent Jr. and Tre Jones will head eastward. Trent Jr. is one of the most productive scorers of the basketball in all of the land where the Minnesota native has recently seen his recruitment go national as a top-25 prospect. Along with him, Tre Jones gets another look at the program. The younger brother of one-and-done Duke star guard Tyus Jones, the sophomore recently nabbed an offer from the ACC blueblood and it looks like the Blue Devils could be in the lead for him, just as well.
Along with the elite upperclassmen on campus, a few other underclassmen will hit Durham. Immanuel Quickley, a 6-foot-3 guard at the John Carroll School in Maryland, will see the campus. A quick riser in the 2018 class, Quickley doesn’t hold a ton of offers but that can all change as the years progress. Along with him, one of the best freshman in the nation remains in the state as Wendell Moore, a 6-foot-5 wing from Charlotte, visits for the evening of craziness. After picking up an offer from Wake Forest a few weeks back, Moore looks to be one of the best nationally in his class and has some shades of Justise Winslow within his repertoire of abilities.
WHO MIGHT POP?
While there hasn’t been much talked about with him, Khadim Sy heads off to Georgia Tech after visiting Virginia Tech, Purdue, and Kansas State and a commitment from the big man seems in sight where any of the four would gladly take a verbal from him.
A giant sleeper out of the Sunshine State, James Love takes off to La Salle this weekend. Not many are involved with him to date and it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Pioneers pursue a commitment from the long and mobile big man.
For a top-30 recruit, there sure isn’t a lot of national attention given to Bruce Brown; however, he heads to Indiana this weekend, a program that has been spoken around him greatly these past two years.
Finishing up his official visit spree, Tyson Carter will see Ohio State this weekend. Such others as Mississippi State and Miami are heavily involved and it would seem a college commitment will come soon and from the aforementioned group of three.
After visiting Utah last weekend and UNC just a few days ago, Lauri Markkanen, a Finish big man with length and ball skills, heads to Arizona this weekend; he will soon select a college home from this final group of three.
Oregon made a move in getting Crisshawn Clark onto campus this weekend and after the Ohio native saw Pittsburgh last weekend, the junior college standout should be selecting soon from either of these two programs soon.
The biggest commitment that could occur in the coming days is from De’Aaron Fox, a 6-foot-3, elite guard from Texas. He visits Kentucky this weekend for Big Blue Madness and it seems that a verbal could be in sight out of the high level, two-way producer and in Kentucky’s favor.
