Fall Preview Spotlight: Isaiah Kelly
While the Masters Tournament calls its home in Augusta, Georgia, so does Isaiah Kelly, a 6-foot-6, do-it-all type in the 2018 class. Now suiting up alongside Wendell Carter, our top ranked prospect in the 2017 class, Kelly has a chance to be a perfect complement in the frontcourt to the elite big man over the next two years that the duo play alongside each other.
At the Fall Preview on Saturday, Kelly impressed in a major way. He was arguably one of the top forwards that I was able to evaluate and it wasn’t just his current production abilities that he has me excited, yet also his future in playing various spots in the frontcourt.
The sophomore forward has a great, early skillset as he works best facing the basket and can convert from off the catch from deep, hit on pull-up jumpers with a hand in his face, and also shows deceptive athleticism on hard-rocking righty jams off his left foot. Throw in his willingness to post-up the smaller defender on the block and finish on up and under moves and what you have is a polished, mismatch offensive weapon within the half-court setting.
Due to his efficient offensive punch, Kelly has already begun to see a high-major, college recruitment. “I have offers from Wisconsin, Xavier, Alcorn State, and Vanderbilt, and I think my coach and I are going to Xavier next weekend.”
A quality student in the classroom and looking to major in either architecture or something in the medical field, the Peach State native noted on what he is looking for in a college. “My mom really pushes the academics but I also want a place that will help me get to the NBA.”
A mature ballplayer with an old-school game, while Kelly is some time away from any sort of college commitment, be ready to hear much more about the heady matchup issue in the frontcourt from here on out, especially as more get the chance to see the sophomore this winter at Pace Academy.
