3@3: Diving deeper into the class of 2017
Welcome to the 2015-2016 season in the state of Georgia. The March to Macon has officially begun and we couldn’t be more excited to get things rolling here in the Peach State. Everyday for the next couple of weeks we will tackle three questions at 3 p.m. about the upcoming season.
Justin Young and Carter Wilson will jump right into the conversation about the best teams, best players, best games and much more as the opening tip looms around the corner. With today’s release of the class of 2017 rankings, we wanted to focus on the class a little deeper.

What’s the strength of Georgia’s junior class?
Depth. Lots of depth. I currently have 59 players projected to be a Division I player as we head into the season. That’s a staggering amount of prospects. There are a number of players that are on the cusp (both projecting upward and downward) so that number will certainly fluctuate. There are players for every level at every position. It has been a while since I’ve seen depth like this, maybe a decade ago. And we’re just really starting. That’s encouraging. - Justin Young
Simply put, everything. This class has it all. While it is very heavy at the top with a ton of high major talent, it also has a lot of depth with a lot of Division I prospects. It has size, it has guards, and it has players with diverse sets of skills. This is the best class in Georgia in a number of years and is better than the 2008 class, which had a number of high level and five star prospects including a players who are now in the NBA in Al-Farouq Aminu & Dequan Jones. Looking back at the 2017 class in a few years and seeing where these players end up will be very interesting. - Carter Wilson
Who in the class of 2017 is the biggest sleeper in the state?
Now that we have our updated and extended class of 2017 rankings out, I don’t want to mention any of those guys. They are sleeping no more. So… How about JD Notae of Newton? The 6-foot-2 scoring guard tore it up with the Atlanta Lightning during the travel circuit. Now back with the Rams, he’s poised for a big season at the high school level. Notae can flat out shoot the rock. - JY
Henry County could be emerge as a good team this year, and they are led by a 2017 sleeper that I really like in point guard Javon Greene. He has been one of my favorite players at fall showcases and was a top performer at the HoopSeen Fall Preview. He is a crafty left handed point guard and is one of the best ball handlers in Georgia’s 2017 class. He has a complete offensive game and could emerge as one of the better guards in the class and one of the best scorers in the class as well. - CW
Which player in the class of 2017 can make a big jump this HS season in the rankings?
The answer could be found in the sleeper question above. Notae could be one of those guys. Greene at Henry County could be another. So could his teammate Damion Rosser. But I’m looking closely at the two guards. Kane Williams (South Paulding/pictured above), Phillip Cirillo (Cherokee), Phlan Fleming (Cedar Shoals) and David Qumiby (Dougherty) are all guys that I’m excited to watch closely this season. - JY
Rather than looking at guys who could make a jump into the rankings, my eyes are on two guys I think could make big strides this year and elevate their status. The first is Derrick Cook of Langston Hughes. Cook is a combo guard with a lot of size that will attract a lot of college coaches. With Chuma Okeke now at Westlake, Cook’s role as a scorer and decision maker will expand, leaving the opportunity for a huge season. The other is Josh Jackmon of Miller Grove. Miller Grove’s backcourt is very deep, which will make it difficult to stand out. However, he will most likely draw the toughest defensive assignment almost every night, and I think will make himself a standout in the Wolverine backcourt. - CW
