SEC Freshman Spotlight: Georgia, South Carolina

The SEC is a conference that is on the rise and starting to draw in a lot of the nation's top talent. With a lot of the programs starting their momentum with the class of 2015, the SEC is becoming a conference that can compete with any conference in the country on the hardwood.

In the coming days, we will take a look at the top incoming freshmen for every program in the SEC, where we will highlight who can contribute to their team's success, make a name for themself, and leave their imprint on the program.

GEORGIA

Once an afterthought on the SEC basketball scene, Georgia is starting to become a factor under head coach Mark Fox, who has led the Bulldogs to back-to-back 20-win seasons. Fox and his staff have done a great job recruiting within the state of Georgia with the likes of Kenny Gaines, Charles Mann, and JJ Frazier. This year’s freshman class is no different with in-state recruits Derek Ogbeide and Will Jackson. Ogebeide burst onto the scene during his final travel season with Southern Stampede and during his senior year at Pebblebrook, making a name for himself on the national scene. The 6-foot-9 big man brings size and the ability to control the paint and protect the rim, values which could see him find his way onto the floor this year. Joining him are wings Will Jackson & E’Torrion Wilridge. Jackson, originally a UConn commit, is an Athens product who chose to stay at home. He is a shooting guard with great size who uses his strength and craftiness to get to the basket. Wilridge comes to the Dawgs from Beaumont, TX and will provide a lot of length on the wing. He can provide scoring with his ability to slash to the basket, where he can use his athleticism and size to score in the paint. Combine this crew with what Georgia is slated to bring in for the class of 2016, and the future looks bright in Athens.

SOUTH CAROLINA

Frank Martin is quietly getting the job done in Columbia and bringing in some guys that could potentially make South Carolina a factor in the SEC. This year’s score is PJ Dozier, a homegrown McDonalds All-American. Dozier is a 6-foot-6 combo guard who will give a lot of versatility to the Gamecocks, with the ability to play both guard positions as well as defend multiple positions. He will be an immediate contributor and could be a part of one of the most underrated backcourts, joining Duane Notice and Sindarius Thornwell. The other big score in this year’s freshman class is Chris Silva of Roselle, NJ. Silva is an explosive athlete at 6-foot-9 who can contribute as a freshman with his ability to rebound and protect the rim. Most importantly he provides depth in the Gamecock frontcourt. Joining Dozier and Silva is a bevy of frontcourt players including Eric Cobb, Travon Bunch, and Ray Doby. This is certainly a group that keeps the recruiting train rolling for South Carolina, which could add another dimension to the SEC East.
