Saturday commitment recap

While the college football season is well underway now and all eyes are glued on the television screens as what the next possible upset might be (yeah, we are talking to you, Arkansas!), a bevy of basketball programs around the nation are using the heightened platform that college football Saturday's allot in showcasing off what the entire university, as a whole, can offer a student-athlete in attending that respective institution. This past Saturday brought together a load of commitments so why not take a look at those that you might have missed on while you were a couch potato and carb-loading your way up in watching the entire day's worth of football action.

YOELI CHILDS COMMITS TO BYU

Childs may not pass the immediate looks test as the 6-foot-7 big man isn't the greatest of athletes in the world, nor is he the quickest of cats around. That doesn't stop him from producing on the hardwood and in buying in with what makes him unique. A bit undersized within the interior, Childs is an intellectual senior, both on and off the floor, as he garnered Ivy League looks but also outsmarts his opponents on the hardwood with his 15-feet and in capabilities. He has a go-to sweeping hook shot that he can hit over his left shoulder and quality touch on his turn and face shots from the mid-range. Keeping the in-state recruit within Utah borders was big for BYU and while they may have missed out on his travel season teammate in Frank Jackson, the Cougars struck with a four-year winner in the post with Yoeli Childs.

DEANDRE HUNTER TO VIRGINIA

It is absurd the number of different lineups that Tony Bennett is going to be able to throw out onto the floor in future years. On Saturday, the Wahoos struck gold as they closed out their 2016 class in gaining a commitment out of Philadelphia native, DeAndre Hunter. The 6-foot-7 forward nursed an injury this past high school year but broke back out onto the scene running with the Philly Pride bunch on the travel circuit in July. Although a bit skinny, the senior forward can play both forward spots as he can hit the outside jumper and is great out of high-post situations in exploiting matchup issues where he has the feel to set others up for easy looks at the basket, or drive his way to the basket prior to the and-1 conversion. With all three commitments in the 2016 class on campus Saturday, give an early assist to the killer duo of Kyle Guy-Ty Jerome in landing the high upside forward and future teammate in Charlottesville.

COLIN SLATER TO TULANE

Slater has been slept on throughout the west coast now for awhile and on Saturday, it was a program across the nation that struck. Tulane has been attempting to lure higher level prospects to campus over the past few years as they get situated in the AAC and by getting Slater, they found a four-year guy at the lead guard spot come next fall. The 5-foot-11 lead guard has a burst to him on the drive-by and some toughness at the lid. While getting a kid of his stature is good enough, the Green Wave have now received commitments from kids out of the DMV, Ohio, and California in the past two recruiting classes, all three being bountiful areas to recruit much further in. A round of applause for where things might be leading for the New Orleans-based program.

DYLAN FRYE  TO BOWLING GREEN

Mike Huger, the new head boss at Bowling Green, went back to his roots in the Miami region by poaching his lead guard for the future with Dylan Frye. The 6-foot-1 lead guard has some innate toughness to him and doesn't back down from anyone that he might be put up against. He is capable of being thrown off the ball some where he can score the ball via the deep range jumper and also on hard attacks to the basket. Sure, Frye does have to get stronger in order to handle the physicality that the MAC represents, yet while this specific commitment might get swept under the rug, we might look back on it in a few years and give it greater dues because of the large fingerprint that the Florida native might leave on his new home in Ohio.

OTHER COMMITMENTS

  • New Orleans struck with Georgia native, AJ Cheeseman.
  • Wright State went into the DMV and pulled out a 6-foot-5 wing in Everett Winchester.
  • Boise State got itself a solid grab on Saturday by landing Colorado native and 6-foot-5 wing, Justinian Jessup.
