Javin DeLaurier opts to become a Blue Devil

The road has been a bit of a crazy one for Javin DeLaurier. The 6-foot-8 big man from Charlottesville, Virginia, has gone from practically an unknown just a year ago at this time, and into the stratosphere of a priority recruitment from the best of programs nationally. It went from local non-power conferences programs like Old Dominion and Richmond, to regional power conference programs like Virginia Tech and Georgetown, to elite bluebloods nationally like Arizona and Duke, before DeLaurier settled on his future home today in committing to Coach K and his Blue Devils program.

Attending St. Anne’s Bellfield School, DeLaurier has been someone who prided himself on his energy levels on the floor, to go along with his evolving skillset as a power forward. In any given contest, the senior big man is good for at least one, rim rattling dunk on the break and in throwing up quality numbers on the glass and on the scoreboard. However, he isn’t a guy that will be relied upon for his point accumulations, but rather for his elite glue qualities and willingness to do whatever it takes to help secure the W for his squad.

Running with the Team Loaded Virginia bunch that secured the Adidas Uprising Summer Championships in finishing out the hectic month of July, the hard playing senior put up qualities numbers along the way. He averaged over 13 points in just 18 minutes allotted to him, while securing over seven rebounds in any given contest. Throw in his two blocks and over a steal per game and what you have is a high-motor, broad contributor in the frontcourt that Coach K has leaned greatly on in making things mesh in some of his most successful years in Durham.

After visiting Texas and Notre Dame the first two weekends of September, DeLaurier received an offer from the ACC blueblood on September 15 and had scheduled to head off to Durham on October 23. However, the native of Virginia moved the visit up to this weekend where he came to a final conclusion that this would be the exact landing spot for his college schooling and playing career.

In speaking on his commitment, DeLaurier found it hard to pick out one thing that stood out, but rather the entire package that was offered. “Everything. Coach K, the academics, the program. I like it all.”

The STAB forward noted further on his future home. “It is just the perfect combination of what I am looking for. It is a great fit both ways.”

A quality student in the classroom as DeLaurier scored a 32 on the ACT exam, the now committed big man becomes the third person in the 2016 class for the Blue Devils, joining Jayson Tatum, a five-star wing from St. Louis, and Frank Jackson, a 6-foot-3, five-star guard out of Utah. Look for Duke to go one step further in supplanting its class as one of the best yet again as they remain heavily involved with big men Wenyen Gabriel, Marques Bolden, and Harry Giles.
