Jalen Johnson emerges as high-major prospect

2016 High Point (NC) Wesleyan Christian small forward Jalen Johnson had a coming out party this summer with Team Wall on the travel circuit. As expected, he holds a number of scholarship offers now.

“I have offers from Wake Forest, Clemson, Old Dominion, Radford, Miami, Texas Tech, UNC-Greensboro, UNC-Wilmington, Appalachian State, La Salle, USF, South Carolina, VCU, Buffalo, George Washington, College of Charleston, Tennessee, Kansas State, Providence, Mississippi State, USC, Florida, and Alabama,” Johnson told HoopSeen.com.

With the different varieties of levels included in his offers, it is easy to see how Johnson’s summer progressed. He took the next step and has emerged as a legitimate high-major prospect with his potential and upside. Coaches like his athleticism and length, too.

“I think getting out there on the big stage and coming into my own was big,” he said of his emergence. “A lot of the times I’ve been a role player with most teams, so I feel like being one of the main guys on a team contributed to the offers I picked up.”

Things have certainly changed lately. Premiere programs are targeting Johnson now and making him a priority.

“Florida, Alabama, Providence, USC, Miami, and Tennessee are coming the hardest.”

Johnson was scheduled to visit Florida this weekend, but the trip has to be re-scheduled. Nevertheless, they look to be in a good position right now, and the senior says there is a lot to like about the Gators.

“I like the style of play, the location, the academics, and the coaching staff,” he explained.

Alabama is the latest scholarship offer for the 6-foot-6 forward. With their recent advancement on the recruiting trail headed by Avery Johnson, Johnson is intrigued with what is happening in Tuscaloosa.

“Alabama is nice. The school sounds like a great place and they definitely have the coaching staff to get the players to the next level.”

Johnson has no other plans for other visits right now, nor does he have a timetable for trimming his list.
