E1T1 Showcase: Top Wings

The Each 1 Teach 1 Showcase brought in some of the best talent throughout the Sunshine State on Saturday. The state sure isn’t lacking in talent in the coming years and while there were a number of kids that have already established themselves as quality college recruits, there were others that enhanced their resumes during their time in Tampa. On the wings, a number of prospects showed versatility in guarding different spots, making the open jump shot, and on finishing at the basket amidst contact, yet no one else shined as much compared to the others than LJ Figueroa.

Jerome Merritt, SG/SF, Oldsmar Christian School, 2016: I was able to get a glance at Merritt Friday evening catching his high school team's open gym and on Saturday, Merritt showed me even more with how tough and athletic he really is. Sure, he doesn't have a defined skillset at this time but the kid buys in on each possession and already has the college ready body that should enable for production from day one on a college campus. Merritt is more of a slasher to the basket and can score through the body off his feet. He can practically guard the 2-4 at this time and with a recent offer from FIU, I wouldn't be surprised to see many more non-power conference programs get involved with the Sunshine State native in the coming weeks.

Alberto Moreno, SG, Liberty Christian School, 2016: Moreno is a good size 2-guard who can even play a slot over at the lead guard spot where he can facilitate his team’s half-court offense, but also score the ball in a variety of ways. The lefty has a good stroke from deep and nice slashing abilities off the perimeter. Capable of playing all three spots in the backcourt and a nice developing set of ball skills, Moreno showed off great strides that he has made within his game and skillset over the past few months where he seems ready to break out further as a college prospect this winter down south.

Chaundee Brown, SG, 2017: Built like an NFL linebacker, Brown stands out immediately with his physique and more than comprehends how to use his body in attacking gaps off the bounce and in finishing at the basket through the body. His jumper game has improved some as he made a few pull-ups throughout the event but where Brown brings his greatest value is on the defensive end of the floor. With good length, quality focus, and the body in line, the junior wing can guard all three perimeter positions and while offers are in hand from UCF, Georgia, Texas Tech, and UAB, it would seem that his list is just the beginning of what the recruitment process may look like by this time next year.

LJ Figueroa, SG/SF, Oldsmar Christian School, 2017: Skill development is always nice to see with prospects as they move up the ranks. Figueroa definitely showed this throughout my two viewings of him this past weekend in Tampa as the Boston native has an accurate deep ball from off the catch, yet has gotten a lot more productive in playmaking off the bounce. Due to his long stride and extended wingspan, Figueroa gets to the basket with ease and makes for fine putback tip-ins on the weakside glass. A lot more confident heading into his junior campaign, the long and rangy wing has his game headed in the right direction and because of it, picked up an offer out of his hometown Boston College program on Monday.

Darius Banks, SF, St. Petersburg High School, 2017: Banks has continued to work on his body and frame and the 6-foot-5 wing showed off quality athleticism at the rack. He really excels out in the break and has a solid outside jumper that seems to be his bread and butter at this time. A hard line-driver to the basket where he uses his strength well to get places off his right hand, the St. Petersburg product does have to tighten his handles some and facilitate a bit better. However, with a recent offer in hand from Florida Gulf Coast, there is a lot to like with the potential out of Darius Banks as a two-way producer on the wings at the next level.
