E1T1 Showcase: Top Guards

The Each 1 Teach 1 Showcase brought in some of the best talent throughout the Sunshine State on Saturday. The state sure isn’t lacking in talent in the coming years and while there were a number of kids that have already established themselves as quality college recruits, there were others that enhanced their resumes during their time in Tampa. In the backcourt, there were a few that stood out with their facilitating skills, shot-making, and the ability to value the basketball during their time in Tampa but it was Darius Perry that may have been the clear, standout guard during the one-day affair.

KJ Fitzgerald, PG, Cardinal Newman High School, 2017: Fitzgerald is a guy that can put you in blender at any given time. While he isn't the biggest of guys around and failed to show off much of a jumper during his time in Tampa over the weekend, the lead guard comes in the pass-first variety. His handles are elite and good enough to put him on the And-1 Mixtape Tour! Impossible to contain on the breakdown, Fitzgerald gets wherever he wants and with a variety of moves. Toss in his vision near the basket and the Cardinal Newman product displays the long term abilities of a high level assist guy at the next level.

Antwann Jones, SG, Sickles High School, 2018: Talk about having the body at such a young age. Jones brings a killer physique that he uses to shed off contact on the hardwood but where he really brings a ton of value is in making the defense pay with the perimeter jumper. Confidence isn't an issue with the Sickles High guard as he can absolutely light it up from as far out as 23-feet away from the basket. Born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Jones moved to Florida at a young age and has flourished ever since. He won't ever be described as an athletic freak but more as a power guy as he is efficient with his shot taking and listing early offers from Rutgers and South Carolina at this time, Jones has the makings of a top tier recruit in the 2018 class.

Darius Perry, PG/SG, Wheeler High School, 2017: The Peach State native took his talents six hours south on Saturday and the explosive guard showed off his improving athleticism at the basket and polished pull-up game where he can score the ball at all three levels on the floor. Perry has put in some time with the weights and it really shows as the aggressive junior doesn’t get bothered by added physicality on the attack to the basket and his passing skills off the bounce have followed a similar route. One of the best guards from the southeast in 2017, Perry only backed it up even further in Tampa this past weekend.

David Pierce III, SG, Gibbs High School, 2018: Recently picking up his first offer from Matt Driscoll and his North Florida squad at the end of August, Pierce is definitely a name to know out of the state of Florida. The 6-foot-3 guard has a great body on him and he uses it well to shed off the bump on the attack to the basket. He rarely gets sped up by pressure and can be slid over onto the ball in facilitating his squad's half-court offense as a secondary ballhandler. Pierce works well out of pick-and-roll scenarios and with a quality mid-range pull-up within his arsenal, the first offer from UNF is just the beginning of what should be a quality college recruitment for the SEBA Select guard.

Anfernee Simons, PG/SG, Edgewater High School, 2018: A young but solid college prospect at this stage as it seems he has already grown an inch or so since last seeing him at the end of July, the 6-foot-2 guard brings good length on the perimeter. While he hasn’t fully grown into his frame just yet, Simons understands how to use his quality first step to get past his defender before making jumpers via the killer pull-up below the arc. Planning to graduate in 2017 and then prep as a 2018 class member, Simons is a late-bloomer that could announce himself as a high-major recruit, that is if he continues to grow some and progress his ball skills the way that he should.
