Curt Jones commits to Indiana

Indiana made a splash Saturday morning on the recruiting trail as Curt Jones, a 6-foot-3 guard from Richmond, Virginia, came off the board and committed to the Hoosiers. The playmaking senior is capable of playing either spots in the backcourt and seems to have found a nice, comfy landing spot in Bloomington come next fall.

Down to a final four of IU, Georgetown, California, and Oklahoma State, Jones opted to end things on Saturday and should become a quality piece over the next few years at the Big 10 institution. Now the third member of the Boo Williams travel program, along with Troy Williams and Robert Johnson currently on the roster, Jones should fit in from day one at Indiana.

On the travel circuit this past summer, Jones made over 35-percent of his perimeter attempts while averaging close to 16 points and four rebounds per game. With a long body type, Jones excels out in the break and as a slicer to the basket but also isn’t afraid to let it fly from deep. Many have questioned whether Jones is a lead guard, scoring guard, or combo type, but whichever spot you want to place him, Jones is a gamer that has been through the gauntlet that is the Nike EYBL, along with a national high school schedule lacing up his shoes with the Huntington Prep program, the same school that big man Thomas Bryant competed for last year.

With the need to replace Yogi Ferrell and the possibility of James Blackmon leaving next year for the NBA, the need for a guy like Jones was immense. Many have called for Tom Crean to recruit better kids off the court and Jones fits the mold. He is a well-groomed, laid back senior recruit that shouldn’t be much of an issue off the floor and on it, should play well in the up-tempo, attacking offense that the Hoosiers have to come to love over the past few years.

Curt Jones is the second commit to Indiana as the Big 10 program already holds one from Grant Gelon, another quality shooter from within the state’s borders, and it looks like IU will go big and continue to chase after the likes of Miles Bridges, Mario Kegler, Thon Maker, and De’Ron Davis in finishing out its 2016 class.
