Updating the 2016 Georgia rankings

After a busy travel season, it was time to re-evaluate our Georgia rankings for the class of 2016. We polled our staff and debated our notes from April all the way to the end of July. Here is our post travel season rankings for the Peach State.

RACE TO THE TOP ON POINT

The gap between Kobi Simmons (No. 1/St. Francis) and Alterique Gilbert (No. 2/Miller Grove) grows smaller and smaller. As we’ve noted before, our rankings are long-term projections. The advantage goes to Simmons in that regard because of size and athleticism. As the two return to their teams, we’ll monitor the season closely with each player. Both had their stellar moments on the national circuit.

HELLO, BIG MEN

The rest of the top five play out and lean on the side of size. Future Harvard big man Chris Lewis (No. 3/Milton), James Banks (No. 4/Mount Vernon) and Romello White (No. 5/Peachtree Ridge) round out the bunch.

Lewis has been the most consistent of the bunch while Banks may have the most intrigue. White returns back to Peachtree Ridge after a year in Florida at IMG Academies. All three bring something different to the table.

BOLD PREDICTIONS

The value of guys like Kamar Baldwin (No. 8/Apalachee) and Josh Okogie (No. 9/Shiloh) at the college is sky high. Each brings a different level of competitiveness to the table and both raise the level of play of those they share the court with.

Baldwin was an important piece to the loaded Atlanta Celtics roster. When the game was on the line, Baldwin was on the floor. He always seems to find a way to make a positive and productive play. Wherever he goes to college, Baldwin will be favorite with the fans and the coaches that are behind him.

Okogie never missed a beat with the talented CP3 squad on the Nike EYBL circuit. The Gwinnett County native is the ultimate glue guy and someone that can be the star or supporting cast whenever called upon.

Both guys may be the most decorated of all of the players in the loaded 2016 Georgia class by the time it is all wrapped up in college.

BIG RISERS

After a magnificent showing at the Peach Jam (again), future Auburn guard Jared Harper moves up to No. 6 (increasing eight spots). He’ll be the catalyst for the Pebblebrook squad that graduated quite a bit from the AAAAAA runner up program.

Anfernee McLemore (No. 13/Worth County) had a great spring and solid July. The bouncy 6-foot-7 forward could continue to climb this high school season. He was last ranked No. 17 overall.

Raquan Wilkins checks in at No. 17 overall. The Westlake wing had a terrific July and debuts nicely on the rankings. Rodney Chatman (No. 23/Lithonia) also debuts strong on the rankings.

SO MUCH DEPTH

As a staff, we discussed so many players for these 35 spots. There were roughly 60 players that could all make this list. The depth is ridiculous.
