The state of Virginia takes center stage

The visits are aplenty throughout the state of Virginia this weekend as some of the = prominent programs are hosting some important visitors before most of those throughout the region head back to school next week.

Down at the University of Virginia, the 2016 class is nearly finished and with little needed in 2017, the Wahoos will bring in a bevy of talent from the 2018 and 2019 classes for its annual elite camp. About an hour or so westward, VCU welcomes in four of its primary targets in the 2017 class. Headed southbound about 90 miles on I-64, Old Dominion isn’t as busy, but it is hosting a rising senior from the Richmond area that could supplant its primetime senior point guard.

VIRGINIA LAYS OUT THE RED CARPET

While the University of Virginia basketball program had a minor hiccup on the recruiting trail a few months back whenever Sacha Killeya-Jones, now a Kentucky commit, decided to sever ties with the ACC program, everything else has been smooth sailing. Tony Bennett and his squad has won two straight ACC regular season titles, has two outstanding guards and two highly versatile forwards with the likes of Ty Jerome, Kyle Guy, Mamadi Diakite, and Jay Huff, all committed for its 2016 class, and in chasing one more to add onto the class and in need of just one commitment in 2017, the Cavaliers will bring in some prime time recruits to campus on Saturday for its elite camp.

Having the chance to get ahead for future classes should really help the cause for Bennett and his staff. Not only is the 2016 Wahoo recruiting class looking elite with the talent and fit in the fold, but the amount of premier ballplayers from within the DMV and the Mid-Atlantic seems to be on the uptick. With that in mind, expect for Virginia to continue in parlaying their success in recent classes and its winning mentality on the hardwood, into quality commitments with the classes to come. Below are just a few of the names that will be heading to campus on Saturday down in Charlottesville.

  • Ty-Shon Alexander/2017 Oak Hill (Virginia) guard
  • Chris Lykes/2017 Gonzaga College (Washington DC) guard
  • JP Moorman/2017 Greensboro Day (North Carolina) forward
  • Brendan Newton/2017 Faith Christian (Virginia) center
  • Eddie Scott/2017 Gonzaga College (Washington DC) wing
  • Rasir Bolton/2018 Benedictine (Virginia) guard

  • Wendell Moore/2019 Cox Mill (North Carolina) wing

OLD DOMINION ZEROES IN

While it isn’t an official visit, getting Maliek White on campus another time before the high school year begins doesn’t hurt the cause with the in-state recruit. White, who runs with the highly successful River City Reign crew, was fabulous all summer long where he showed the ability to play either guard spot in the backcourt and produced thereafter.

Old Dominion has the chance to offer a whole lot to White. It is sometimes a blessing and a curse to follow such a productive ballplayer like rising senior point guard Trey Freeman, of whom has the chance to be the Conference USA player of the year before getting a shot at the NBA next year. While it might be giant shoes to fill into, one better believe that the ODU staff will be giving it their all in selling the George Wythe High standout that the opportunities are afloat for him to step right in and leave a giant fingerprint on an up-and-coming program.

After the visit to ODU, White will take official visits to Pitt, Cincinnati, and Providence, all in consecutive weeks, beginning on the weekend of September 18.

A WEEKEND FULL OF HAVOC

The VCU staff will host a few rising juniors from Philadelphia and the DMV. Products of the Team Final program, Dhamir Cosby-Roundtree and Daron Russell will head to Richmond on Saturday. Both have been very hot names of late where Cosby-Roundtree, a mobile and tough 6’8 big man, has recently picked up offers from such program as Providence, Villanova, and Penn State, with Russell following a similar route in landing such scholarship opportunities from the likes of Temple and La Salle.

Sunday, Will Wade and his new staff will host two DMV recruits, both of whom teamed up on the Team Takeover 16-under squad this past summer. While no offer is in hand just yet, Jelani Williams comes to campus as the 6’3 guard holds such offers from ODU, Hofstra, and Delaware. Joining him is Bullis School wing Chyree Walker. The 6-foot-5 junior is one well-put-together athlete who does great as a facilitator out top and can defend various spots on the floor. VCU has already offered the Maryland native and have made the Takeover product a priority recruit; he recently picked up an offer from Georgia Tech earlier this week.
