ACC Spotlight: Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, Syracuse

When it rains, it pours. That easily could have been said the past few weeks when it came to commitments to programs from within the SEC.

That made us think… which conference could take the reins from the SEC and go on its own roll in picking up some quality commitments in the coming weeks? The answer? The Atlantic Coast Conference.

Today we dive into part four of the five-part series as we inspect the conference and where each school is at with recruits moving forward.

NOTRE DAME

The Irish are coming off one tremendous season on the playing floor and already with a commitment in hand from Temple Gibbs, a tough and productive lead guard out of New Jersey, all eyes point towards the big men crop in 2016. They are in a heated recruitment with Kevin Huerter, a 6-foot-4 guard from New York, but most of their time has been spent on frontcourt prospects. They are deep in the mix with John Mooney, a recent Florida decommit, James Banks, a big man from Georgia who has transferred to nearby La Lumiere for his final year of play, and will get the first chance to host Javin DeLaurier, a high energy and quickly improving forward out of Virginia, for his first official visit on September 5 whenever the football squad kicks off their 2015 campaign on national television against Texas.

PITTSBURGH

The Panthers struck early within the 2016 class as they received a commitment out of Corey Manigault, a big man from Paul VI in Virginia. However, they have been a bit silent of late and while they’re in the loop for Taurean Thompson and Sagaba Konate, two high upside and mobile forwards, where they’re focus is on at the current moment is at the point guard spot. Starting next weekend, the ACC program will attempt to lure in a point guard for its future as Cassius Winston, a lead guard from Detroit who is down to the Panthers, Michigan State, Michigan, and Stanford, will come to campus. With a weekend off, Pitt will bring in Maliek White and Charlie Moore in repetitive weekends and if Jamie Dixon can receive a commit from any of the three, things should be a lot more promising heading into the future after the exodus following next season of four-year stalwart guard, James Robinson.

SYRACUSE

The Orange are in a different kind of predicament this fall after receiving the NCAA rulings that will narrow their scholarship count to 10 for the next three years. The plan was for this to go into effect at the start of the 2016 season, yet already down to the narrowed scholarship amount, chances are they push for the penalty to commence immediately. If that is the case, they would be done in 2016 as they already have a commitment out of Tyus Battle, a 6-foot-6 shooting guard, and Matt Moyer, a 6-foot-7 forward from Ohio; both should be immediate contributors upon setting foot onto campus next fall. In planning ahead, the Cuse could take a positive out of a negative with less than usual scholarship count and focus on just a select few of recruits from within the area. Look for the old Big East power to heavily track and pursue such elite talents as Nick Richards, Trevon Duval, Mohamed Bamba, and Lonnie Walker over the next two years and get a leg up on its competitors in having already completed its 2016 class.
