Duval delivers epic performance at UA Finals
SUWANEE, GA -- Over the years at Suwanee Sports Academy, we’ve seen some pretty amazing players take care of business on the court. The reigning NBA MVP Steph Curry once hooped at SSA as an under-recruiter, zero hype baby-faced prospect. On Wednesday night, Curry’s image hung from the rafters and looked down upon the courts filled with Under Armour sponsored teams and watched one of the best opening nights of basketball that has ever been played at the seven-court facility.
The event organizers rolled out a stellar showcase schedule that featured the best teams and players on the UA Association circuit.
Every star delivered.
Perhaps the biggest and baddest of them on all Wednesday night was class of 2017 guard Trevon Duval.
Paired against Josh Jackson, a player that some believe is the best player in America’s class of 2016, Duval got into a rhythm. When Jackson would score, Duval answered with back-to-back three-pointers.
After a stellar 1 Nation comeback and with his team down a point and just 2.6 seconds left on the clock, Duval took the midcourt in-bounds pass and drove to the left side of the rim for the score.
Ball game. WE R1 came away with the 59-58 win. Duval finished with 24 points. He was terrific as a creator going left, going right and going straight to the iron. He saves his burst of speed only when he needs it and doesn't get too fancy with the ball.
Duval switched to guard Jackson whenever he could and even picked off the Michigan native, smiled up the floor when he took over the rock and waited for Jackson to catch-up. The two players traded buckets for a small stretch in the second half. The moment felt very similar to some of the great match-ups of the mid-2000s match-ups in Las Vegas between the likes of OJ Mayo and Derrick Rose.
The class of 2016 is unusually rich with point guard talent - something that hasn’t happened in a quite a while. The American floor general, at least for a good five years, has been a bit of a dying breed. The class of 2016 has changed that tune with some many elite level players at the position. De’Aaron Fox, Frank Jackson, Lonzo Ball, Kobi Simmons and Dennis Smith are all elite-level prospects.
Enter Duval, a class of 2017 prospect. He might be better than all of them. In the class as a whole, he needs to be considered for the top spot along with DeAndre Ayton and Wendell Carter.
The WE R1 floor general was the best player in the building on an amazing opening night of The Finals.
Duval drew a crowd on Wednesday night as John Calipari, Sean Miller, Roy Williams and Tom Izzo all watched the WE R1 vs 1 Nation game. He said he’s holding offers from the likes of Syracuse, Villanova, California, Missouri, Oregon while programs like Florida are just now jumping into the mix.
If there was a starting storying line on Wednesday night it is this - Duval is here in Atlanta ready to take over the tournament. His play did the talking on opening night. Now, we are all falling into line with that thought.
Duval was simply amazing.
