Recapping the HS division of Gibbons championships

SUWANEE, GA — The history books of the HoopSeen Bob Gibbons Tournament of have added another chapter on Sunday as a new round of champions have been crowned. Here’s the recaps from the high school games.

17U CHAMPIONSHIP GOES THE WAY OF THE GEORGIA STARS

The Georgia Stars beat Team MOAM Black 80-56 to win the 17U championship at the 2015 Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions. The Stars’ size, physicality, and athleticism were too much for teams to match up with all weekend. 

In the championship game, Udoka Azubuike, who was named tournament MVP,led the Stars with 19 points, while Brandon Robinson and Wendell Carter tallied 18 and 14 respectively. 

In the loss for Team MOAM Black, wing Darius Allen was impressive, showing off his athleticism. He and Devonte Jordan had great weekends, navigating MOAM through the bracket. - Carter Wilson 

UPWARD STARS CLAIM 16U 

In a loaded 16U bracket, the Upward Stars Southeast came away holding the trophy after they defeated the Georgia Stars 59-54.

2017 guard Tariq Simmons capped off an impressive weekend for Upward with 25 points. AJ Oliver was also a big part of their win. 

Davion Mitchell and Deaundre Ballard made a big scoring run in the second half. Mitchell finished with a team-high 22 points. Ikey Obiagu dominated the defensive end of the floor with his elite shot-blocking ability. - Garrett Tucker

GEORGIA STARS TAKE HOME 15U TITLE

The Georgia Stars took home the 15U Gibbons championship with a convincing 51-30 win over Team United. The Stars controlled the game from the start behind the play of their posts, Jared Jones (12 points) and Chris Parks (10 points). Tournament MVP Corderius Hastings chipped in nine points on three 3-pointers. 

Hastings was impressive all weekend displaying a perimeter stroke along with an ability to get to the rim and distribute to his team's bigs. The Griffin High product is a player to keep on your radar in Georgia's 2018 class.

Team United was  led throughout the weekend by their impressive guard Qon L Murphy. Murphy led Team United with 10 points in the championship game all while jumping onto the scene in the 15U division. - Kory Keys
