Watford taking Alabama by storm

Despite only being an 8th grader, 2019 Shades Valley (AL) forward Trendon Watford is already taking Alabama by storm. He hasn’t stepped foot into a high school hallway, yet he is one of the most popular prospects in the Heart of Dixie, and rightfully so.

Trendon, the younger brother of former Indiana star Christian Watford, was the focal point for his Shades Valley squad this season. The Watford name has a lot of carry, but Trendon’s play vaulted him into the conversation as one of the state’s best prospects.

Watford finished his initial high school season averaging 20 points and 12 rebounds. His experience can’t be described by stats, though.

“I would say my season went pretty good. I came in the top 5 in scoring and rebounding in 6A,” Watford told HoopSeen.com. “I learned how to be tougher and to play through a lot of contact, and not listen to all of the negative stuff I heard.”

The 6-foot-7 forward has a rare combination of size and skill. Watford has great shooting form and can hit shots from all over the floor. His versatility and talent will have college coaches vying for him in a few years. In fact, a couple of schools have already expressed interest in him.

“Auburn, Notre Dame, and Virginia have shown interest,” he said. The previous staff at Alabama had been keeping tabs, too.

Watford will play with the Alabama Challenge 16s on the AAU circuit. That exposure alone will increase his recruitment. However, he is focused on getting better over the summer.

“I want to keep getting better and just compete against some of the best players in the nation.”

Here are some highlights of Watford in action:
