Obiagu en route to elite status
How players end their high school season and how they start their spring is a great barometer to how their progression is going. Looking at the body of work from Greenforest Christian sophomore center Ikey Obiagu, things are looking up as we enter the travel circuit.
Obiagu single-handedly helped Greenforest beat Athens Christian, a team loaded with talent, in the semifinals of the Class A Private state tournament. When he entered the contest against ACS, Greenforest was down by a dozen. The 7-footer came into the game and rerouted every attack Athens Christian had en route to the rim.
Greenforest came roaring back thanks to his shot-blocking and shot-altering skill set. It was one of the best defensive performances we've seen over the course of the high school season.
Obiagu was the best interior defender at the Elite Preview and the host of comparable post talent that was in attendance at the camp said he was the hardest player to score against. Winston Neal, our camp director, raved about Obiagu's value as an elite high-major prospect.
When we release our first set of rankings for Georgia's 2017 class, Obiagu will be high on the list and we are advocates of his placement inside the national top 50 for the rising junior class. Defensively Obiagu is a game changer and is one of the most unique players in America for his classification.
Obiagu said he's received a scholarship offer from Kansas State while Wake Forest, Virginia, LSU and George Mason have shown various amounts of interest.
We'll see Obiagu again April 3-4 at the Norman Parker Showcase at Suwanee Sports Academy. He anchors the middle for the Georgia Stars 16U team coached by Ryan Lewis.
