Jenkins rallies past Morgan County for AAA title
Macon is a familiar place for Morgan County, as this time last year the Bulldogs won the AAA state championship over Buford.
This year, they were back and up against a very tough Jenkins team out of Savannah.
It was no secret that the game plan for Jenkins was to be one of the few teams to contain Tookie Brown.
At the start, it looked like that game plan was going to get thrown out the window, as Brown got off to a quick start for Morgan County.
But he was not alone. Jailyn Ingram and Devorious Brown also helped Morgan County build a double-digit lead in the first half.
However, Jenkins has come to be known as a scrappy team with a lot of fight. And they showed that being faced with the early deficit.
Jenkins dominated the second and third quarters behind big time scoring from point guard Eric Johnson and Georgia State signee Malik Benlevi. They helped the Warriors build a sizeable lead of their own through three quarters.
Then Tookie Brown and Jailyn Ingram had a run of their own.
Connecting with one another on multiple occasions, the duo rallied to get Morgan County back in the game including connecting on a pick and roll three-point play in the final minute.
In the end, it was Jenkins who would hold for the last shot in the game.
In the final seconds, Eric Johnson took the ball down the left side of the paint and threw up a beautiful left-handed lay-in with 3.6 seconds left.
That shot proved to be the winner for Jenkins as a Morgan County inbounds pass went out of bounds and Jenkins came out victorious 62-60 to claim the AAA championship.
Eric Johnson led Jenkins with 17 points and 6 assists and Malik Benlevi added 12.
However, a major standout for Jenkins was Jamori Bryant, who gave a huge effort in defending Tookie Brown.
Brown finished with 25 in the loss for Morgan County.
