Calhoun County wins Class A Public
When Calhoun County places the Class A Public state championship trophy in the case at the school, there won't be an asterisk on the prize.
If there was, it would read as such:
*Insane.
The Cougars beat Greenville 84-82 on a DaJohn Williams lay-up with 5.6 seconds left to play to claim the state championship in a wild final quarter.
Calhoun County was sitting pretty going into the final eight minutes of action, up by 11. Then Greenville stormed back with stifling defense that forced six turnovers that lead to a 16-2 run. Greenville, for several minutes, looked like the one controlling the pace.
But this game wasn't your typical game. Greenville missed a couple of key free throws and made a couple of turnovers of their own. Calhoun had the ball with 30 seconds left to play and appeared to hold for the last shot.
Williams eventually got the ball and saw the Greenville defense open up. It was time to bring home the trophy to Calhoun County for the first time in 18 years.
"We were in five wide and coach told me to attack and that's what I did," Williams said after the game.
Calhoun nearly let it slip right out of their hands. The Cougars shot just 6-16 in the fourth but the final tally was the difference maker. Williams finished with 20 points in the game. So did senior Quentin Taylor.
Greenville had a monster fourth quarter from big man Renault Griffin, who scored all nine of his points during the fourth quarter.
Senior guard Jamal McKee finished with 29 points and 12 rebounds in the loss.
