West playing his way into the conversation
Google search results for "Lamont West" have probably jumped significantly over the last month in the state of Georgia. Who is this mystery man at Miller Grove High School and where did he come from? The 6-foot-7 bouncy senior is producing for the Peach State powerhouse early in the season.
He shined on Saturday at the Nike Explosion and played well in Mississippi at the Lighthouse Classic. So far, his new head coach is impressed.
"He's a combo forward. he can put it on the floor. He's been knocking down threes and playing his midrange game. He can make plays by putting it on the floor and getting to the free throw line. That's the thing with him. He can do a lot," Sharman White said.
"We've got to do a little bit better job defensively and how we do things defensively. That will take a little bit of time. To me, he's got a chance to be really, really good at a high level."
West is trying to find his comfort zone with his new team but constantly scoring in the 20s and flirting with double-digit rebounds every game has caught people's attention.
"I'm more effective as a shooter and slasher," West said. "Being a big man, I can do it to help my team. But I'm at my best when I'm shooting threes and attacking the basket."
White, no stranger to coaching high-level Division I talent, said he was surprised to hear about how slow West's recruitment is.
"He has an incredible skill set for the size that he has. The amount of offers he had coming to Miller Grove is amazing to me," White said. "He told me he had a couple of schools interested but not a lot of offers."
To date, West says, Bethune-Cookman has offered while DePaul and Bowling Green are showing interest. There are other schools that have throw a line into the water but there isn't a lot of movement at the moment. There is some work to do academically before things become more serious with colleges.
West said he played for the Queen City Prophets and previously attended Withrow High School in Cincinnati, Ohio.
