Spain Park takes home Superior Plumbing bracket at Wellstar Lake City Classic
ACWORTH, GA -- When it came down to do it, Spain Park (AL) was just too big, too strong and too good on the boards, claiming the Superior Plumbing bracket of the Wellstar Lake City Classic on Tuesday night at Allatoona.
Paced by the elite rebounding efforts of sophomore big man Austin Wiley, Spain Park of Birmingham, Alabama put away Pope 71-51.
Wiley was just too much in the paint, grabbing everything in sight. He was a one-man wrecking ball in the paint and kept a good Pope team off the glass. Wiley ripped down 21 rebounds in the championship victory.
The five-star big man was terrific in the lane all week long, posing problems for every team that stepped in the way. Wiley finished the week with eye-popping numbers, averaging 18.7 points, 16.7 rebounds and 2.6 blocks a contest.
He didn't do it alone. Championship teams rarely do it via one-man show. Jamal Johnson, also a sophomore, was outstanding all week long, too. The 6-foot-4 guard was a match-up problem in every game. In the championship game, his poise at the free throw line was terrific. Johnson was a perfect eight of eight in the final eight minutes of the game. Johnson finished the game with 21 points, eight rebounds and six assists.
Pope wasn't going to be an easy out by any stretch of the imagination. The duo of Chase Hutchins and Garrick DeBowles, easy all-tournament selections in the Superior Plumbing bracket, have stepped to the line time and time again this season to combat talented teams.
This game was no different. Hutchins did struggle, however getting to the foul line. Coming into the game, he reached the charity stripe 29 times in the two games that proceeded the championship. This game, however, he only made it to the line five times.
DeBowles was a match-up problem on offense but he struggled to find success on the glass. Regardless, the Embry-Riddle bound forward finished the week strong and earned the praises of those who watched all of the action.
Air Force bound big man Drew Romich did a good job of limiting Wiley on the offensive end in the first half, giving the young talent trouble scoring in the paint. Romich stretched the floor on offense and gave Hutchins a lot of room to attack.
Spain Park broke ahead with three three-pointers from the most unlikely of places. Noah Pitts, a 6-foot-3 wide-body, stepped behind the triple line and buried shot after shot after shot in the first half. Pope's trio of Tyler Borko, Mitchell Hollis and Cole Childers all had important plays in the defeat.
