NABOA Pre-Season Basketball Clinic Recap

HARVEST, AL -- Not only was the NABOA Pre-Season Basketball Clinic a good tune-up for the area referees, but it was also a good event to get high school basketball rolling in the Huntsville area. Here are the top performers from the event, headlined by an abundance of underclassmen.

John Petty, 2017 SG, J.O. Johnson: Petty was the most impressive prospect in attendance on Saturday. The 6-foot-5 wing continues to improve his offensive arsenal and game each time out. He is scoring on all three levels, but the most impressive improvement of his game is his mid-range jumper. Petty excelled with his one -dribble pull-up from 15 feet consistently. Like usual, he continues to show he is an above-the-rim player and an elite talent in the Class of 2017.

Joshua Langford, 2016 CG, Madison Academy: Now that the high school season is back in action, we will see a lot more of Langford strictly playing the 1. At 6-foot-6, Langford is a matchup problem for other guards, but he doesn't necessarily make the game all about him. The best attribute of his game may be his unselfishness and facilitating ability. He doesn't force things and looks to distribute the ball to his teammates. Langford has also trimmed up his body a little bit since the summer. He says he has been eating better and taking care of his body, and it shows.

Ethan Stair, 2015 SG, Hazel Green: The Mercer commit showed off his versatile and all-around game in his two games. Against Madison Academy, Stair and Langford matched up and guarded each other throughout the game. Both did superb jobs, but Stair's defense was very impressive. His defensive ability usually is overshadowed by his shooting ability and athleticism at 6-foot-5. Stair will have to be versatile this season if Hazel Green hopes to compete in 7A; his size and skills will force him to play each position on the floor.

Justin Hopkins, 2016 SG, J.O. Johnson: Hopkins may have opened my eyes the most from this event. The 6-foot-3, 190-pound shooting guard can rebound amongst bigs and do just fine. He has great body control around the rim, allowing him to finish with contact with ease. He is a great athlete and capabale defender on the defensive end of the floor. I still would like to see more shots from the perimeter at this juncture, but mid-majors and beyond that need a big, physical wing, this is your guy.

Joel Logan, 2015 SF, James Clemens: Logan was one of the pleasant surprises from the event. At 6-foot-5, Logan is long and possesses length. He plays above the rim and excels at attacking the basket. The best of his game is in the future, though. He oozes with potential but produces, and JUCO and NAIA schools may want to take a look at him.

Damion Evans, 2015 SF, Columbia: Evans does a lot of damage at the rim. In fact, with his body and size, he may be one of the better wings that can get to the rim in Huntsville. At 6-foot-3 and 180-pounds, Evans is overpowering for most of his competition. He has a knack for getting in the lane and getting to the rim, while also drawing fouls. He needs to work on his ball-handling and improve his speed and quickness, but Evans is a player that could draw some lower level looks by the time the high school season concludes.

Myles Parker, 2017 CF, Madison Academy: In his first game action since breaking his leg last spring, Parker looked very good. The 6-foot-7 forward mixed up things, as he played inside and out. He has great length to rebound on the inside, but his soft hands and ball-handling ability allows him to play on the perimeter, too. At this point, Parker is best-suited as a stretch 4 man because of his ability to hit shots from the perimeter, but don't be surprised if he evolves into a 3 before too long.

Trai James, 2016 PG, James Clemens: When talking about the best pure point guards in the Huntsville area, junior Trai James has to be brought up. The 6-foot-1 floor general plays with a great pace to his game, and he doesn't allow pressure to cause mistakes. James does a nice job of keeping his teammates involved and putting the ball where it needs to be to win games.

Luke Luna, 2015 C, Grissom: At 6-foot-10, Luna towers over most his competition. Saturday, he used his height and size to dominate around the rim. His coordination and mobility need to improve, but the big guy has great hands and he can finish around the rim at a high rate. Luna will be a prospect to monitor this winter. He has progressed over the past few years, but we are excited to see how the big fan fares during his senior season.
