The Tucker Topics: Oct. 1
With prospects making official visits and attending football games, things are starting to heat up on the recruiting front. Before we know it, the fall signing period will be upon us. With that being said, here's the big points this week via my first notebook here at HoopSeen.com.
THE RICHIE EFFECT
Clemson head coach Brad Brownell filled his open assistant coaching spot with UAB assistant Richie Riley, and a week into his tenure as a Tiger, it looks like it is already paying off.
Last weekend, Brownell received a commitment from the top point guard in Georgia, Pebblebrook's Ty Hudson. What does this have to do with Riley, you may ask? He was the first coach to offer Hudson a scholarship last summer, and while Clemson probably had the best odds to receive a commitment, that hire sealed the deal for Brownell and his staff.
That's two nice additions for Clemson. Now, they turn their attention to 2015 power forward Luke Maye, who will make his official visit this weekend.
POINT GUARDS DWINDLING
The talk of the 2015 class has been the lack of elite point guards, and the list continues to quickly dwindle down. With Hudson off the board, and the top available point guard in the country, Dallas (TX) Kimball's Jawun Evans, expected to announce his decision today, more schools will be out of a point guard.
It looks like Evans (pictured above) will likely choose from Illinois and Oklahoma State, with the Cowboys having the upper hand because of immediate playing time.
With that being said, expect guards that are being pursued by mid-major programs to receive some high-major interest. A couple of names that come to mind are Stackhouse Elite's Ahmad Caver and Tobias Howard.
BIG WEEKEND IN KNOXVEGAS
Donnie Tyndall has had an impressive run on the recruiting front since his hiring at Tennessee last spring. However, this could be one of his most important weekends on the job.
The Vols will have a big visitor (literally) in Memphis product Skal Labissiere (pictured above) Memphis and Kentucky have been considered the leaders for quite some time, and North Carolina's Roy Williams has made numerous visits to see Skal as of late. If Donnie Knoxville could make a pull with a big name prospect like Labissiere, he could definitely get things rollin' for Tennessee.
Chris Clarke, a 2015 guard from Virginia Beach (Va.) Cape Henry, will also be on campus for an official visit, and Tennessee is getting a lot of attention in his recruitment.
The top 2016 player in Tennessee, Braxton Blackwell, will also visit unofficially.
It is also worth noting that Malik Newman will visit Ole Miss this weekend, he confirmed to HoopSeen.com.
BIG THINGS BUILDING IN TALLAHASSEE
Very few schools in the country have had a success on the recruiting trail in the past few weeks like Leonard Hamilton and Florida State have. To sum things up, the Seminoles currently have a top-5 class with their four commitments.
A couple of weekends ago, Tallahassee welcomed Dwayne Bacon and Malik Beasley (pictured above) for official visits and both left their visits committed to the 'Noles. It took 7-foot-3 center Christ Koumadje a couple of days following that visit to make his commitment, but nonetheless, it happened as well.
Those three regional recruits, along with New England's Terance Mann, give Florida State some firepower for the next few years.
That firepower could vault them to being a top competitor in the ACC, challenging the likes of Duke, North Carolina, and Virginia. Good things are coming together in Seminole Country.
