Big time day at The Fall Preview

SUWANEE, GA -- The Fall Preview was the last chance for players to get in some run before the high school season begins in a couple of weeks. Players from every high school grade brought their game and competed until the very end on a busy Sunday at SSA.

MIDDLE GEORGIA STUDS

In years past, middle Georgia has produced elite level talent, but we saw a few players from the region jump off the page at the Fall Preview on Sunday.

One of those players was 2018 power forward Khavon Moore of Westside (Macon). The 6’7” freshman displayed the obvious length, athleticism, and shot blocking ability for someone his size. But the skill that stood out was seeing him take the ball from the 3-point line to the rim in two dribbles with his off-hand. It’s skills like those, to go along with size and athleticism that will have college coaches flocking to Bibb County in the coming years.

Without question, 2016 Will Jerrell out of Crawford County (pictured above) was a head-turner. After the morning session, I had a colleague say, “Hey, you’ve got to see this kid.” And when I did, I was not disappointed. Jerrell is a 6’4” guard that can handle both the point and wing spots. But what stood out the most was his ability to shoot the ball off both the catch and off the dribble. To put it plainly: Jerrell is an all-around playmaker.

Another major player was 2016 power forward Chris Clerkley. The Perry High School product flashed agility to go along with his 6’9” frame. What stood out even more was his skill level at this point in his development. He’s a guy that already understands how to pass out of the post and to go screen somebody.

Add 2017 Greg Couson to the list, as well. The Wilkinson County product is listed at 6’5”, 210 and plays like it. The most impressive piece the sophomore has added to his game is the ability to put the ball on the floor. One play stood out Sunday when he grabbed a rebound, dribbled the length of the floor through traffic, and finished at the rim through contact.

LENGTH, LENGTH, AND MORE LENGTH

The easiest descriptor when evaluating basketball talent nowadays is length. Luckily there was plenty of that on display Sunday. To go along with the aforementioned Moore are 2017s Rayshaun Hammonds and Abayomi Iyiola and 2016 Raylon Richardson.

Hammonds is a 6’7” lefty from Norcross High School that flashes the ability to put the ball on the floor and get to the rim along with a willingness to bang around inside.

Iyiola is a 6’7” power forward from Greenforest Christian that possessed great agility for his size and age. He also showed, while being raw offensively, that he’s willing to run the floor for touches and easy transition buckets.

Richardson looks the part. He’s a 6’6” wing that defends the post, but finds himself on the perimeter primarily offensively. The junior from Miller Grove showed high-level athleticism and even a perimeter stroke at times.

WHO ARE THE POINT GUARDS?

Answer: Christian Turner, Drue Drinnon and Davion Mitchell.

The 2016 Turner is a 5’10” point guard from Tyrone’s Sandy Creek High School. He uses his thick frame to get past defenders to the rim and does an exceptional job keeping his dribble alive in traffic as he surveys his options. It’s easy to see why Division I programs have already come calling.

Drinnon is a 2018 prospect out of East Jackson High School that plays above his age. He never seemed to play out of his element. His ballhandling ability, pull-up game, and basketball IQ are all advanced for a player his age.

Of the three, Mitchell is the best athlete. In terms of pound-for-pound leaping ability, I’m not sure anyone at the event bested the Liberty County sophomore. He’s still developing a perimeter game, but he’s already really good with the ball in his hands.

SHOOTERS!

In a camp setting it’s always hard to find guys that can stroke it from the perimeter. Three in particular stood off the page: Jalen Jordan, Alex O’Connell and the aforementioned Jerrell.

Jordan is a 6’2” 2016 prospect from Rockdale County that I would label as the day’s best shooter. Any time his teammates found him in a spot-up situation, Jordan made the opponent pay. With added bulk, he’ll become even more than a shooter.

O’Connell is a kid that has undergone a major growth spurt recently and it’s paid dividends. At 6’5”, the 2017 Milton product not only does a good job scoring from the perimeter, but he has the ability to get to the rim and even finish above it. With his size, skillset, and basketball IQ, it’s easy to see him developing into a very nice player.

WELCOME TO THE SCENE

I came into Sunday wondering who would jump out at me that I hadn’t seen much of yet. The easy answer here is 2016 Deric Patton out of Carroll High School in Ozark, Ala. Patton’s only 6’0”, but played above the rim as well as anyone in the event. What really stood out about his game was his motor. Whether it was tracking down loose balls or simply making hustle plays, Patton made his presence known from the onset.

ODDS & ENDS

A few other players that stuck out:

2015 Tim Cameron, Norcross

Cameron is a guy that’s 6’3” with high-level athleticism. He’s much more comfortable as a slasher at this stage as his tenacity kept him around the ball.

2015 Ethan Weathers, Harrison

Weathers showed flashes of being a really nice player on Sunday. His strength is definitely an asset as it allowed him to get to the rim and finish through contact on several occasions.

2016 Lane Foster, Berkmar

Foster was an intriguing point guard as he showed great body control to allow himself to stay composed around the rim. He did a good job of squaring his shoulders with everything he did. If he can develop more of a perimeter game…watch out.

We will have much more coverage this week on HoopSeen.com from The Fall Preview.
