GAMCA Coaching Clinic brings state's top coaches together

The Georgia Minority Coaches Association (GAMCA) is holding their second annual basketball coaches clinic on Saturday, October 4th at Charles Drew High School in Riverdale, GA with registration starting at 8 a.m.

The day will be information packed, as some of the best high school and college coaches from around the state will be speaking. The list of speakers includes UGA’s Mark Fox, Georgia Southern’s Mark Byington, George Mason’s Paul Hewitt, GCSU Head Women’s Coach Maurice Smith, Young Harris’s Pete Herrmann, Whitefield Academy’s Tyrone Johnson and East Jackson’s David Boyd.

Hiram High School Head Coach Darius Hodge is the clinic director and he hopes to continue on the strength of last year's event in 2014.

“It is a great opportunity to learn from established coaches," Hodge said. "There is also an intermission between speakers, which gives time to interact and network with other coaches. It also gives time to interact with some of our vendors.”

There has been a huge rise in minority coaches, both nationally and in the state of Georgia with coaches like Sharman White at Miller Grove and Tyrone Johnson at Whitefield.

Hodge said: “It’s awesome, especially for young coaches like myself. To have someone to look up to, guys like Coach (Darren) Rogers (Westlake), Coach (Phil) McCrary (Columbia), and Doug (Lipscomb) at Wheeler, is great. They set the standard and are relatable. It’s good to see minority coaches across the state having a voice.”

Coaches of any level can register until September 28th at www.mcaofga.com. Registration is $30 for members and $40 for non-members, with a staff discount of $35 each for coaches from one school. Lunch is included with registration.
