Tucker’s summer off to a strong start

July is easily the busiest month in the recruiting calendar. Countless games are played, offers are extended, and visits are taken.

For Rayjon Tucker July may as well have started a week early. The Charlotte, N.C. native not only took two unofficial visits, he also picked up a pair of scholarship offers in the final week of June.

Virginia Commonwealth was the first to offer. Clemson followed suit last Monday, when the extended an offer while the 6-foot5 small forward was on campus for a visit.

Now heading into July both of those schools, along with Virginia Tech, find themselves in the forefront of Tucker’s recruitment.

“Clemson, VCU, and Virginia Tech are basically my top three that have offered,” he said.

The family atmosphere around the Clemson program really stood out to Tucker, while on his visit to the Tigers campus.

“I really like the family atmosphere, and the coaches are great,” he said. “The players are all great. They love each other and are really like brothers. I have hung out with them a couple of times. The family atmosphere is important.”

VCU’s style of play is what makes them such an attractive option to the athletic wing.

“The style that I like to play is their style of play.” He said. “That and they have a great coaching staff.”

The coaching staff is exactly why Virginia Tech ranks so high on the list.

“It is really the coaching staff. They want to mature you as a player both on and off of the court,” Tucker said of new Hokie coach Buzz Williams and his staff. “They want to make you better, and they have a winning mentality.  I really just like the coaching staff there.”

Another school who could make its way onto that list at some point is North Carolina, where Tucker visited on Thursday.

“It went great,” Tucker said of his visit to Chapel Hill. “I watched practice a little bit, saw the campus, and went to the museum, so it was good.”

While the Tar Heels are yet to offer, Tucker feels like their interest in him is high.

“I think it is pretty high,” he said. “They just want to watch me in July and see how everything goes.”

Whether North Carolina decides to offer or not, Tucker said it will be some time before his ready to make a final decision about his future.

“I’m still taking it slow,” he said. “I’m going to take my official visits and decide after that.”
