Augusta connection works at FAU
New Florida Atlantic coach Michael Curry didn't have to look too far to find the future scoring option for his new program. He returned home to Augusta, Georgia and plucked Don Coleman of Butler High School out of the loaded 2015 class in the Peach State.
Coleman, one of the very best scorers in Georgia, visited the Boca Raton school over the weekend officially and decided to end his recruitment.
Coleman said he had three reasons why he picked the Owls.
"One, I have a great relationship with all the coaches on the staff and, two, they made it a priority too get me down there to Boca and I just love everything about the program," Coleman said. "Three, they care about me academically the most and that's what matters and they care about my life after basketball. And also because my major - business - is top five in the country."
Curry graduated from Glenn Hills and then moved on to Georgia Southern. He's the most recognizable grad from the Statesboro school and played in the NBA and served as the NBPA president before moving to the college coaching ranks.
Coleman said he likes the wealth of knowledge he can tap into once he gets to the college level.
"I feel I can play right away and make a huge impact. And all the NBA experience the coaching staff had," he said.
Coleman averaged 24.5 points a game, 5.2 rebounds, 2.3 steals and 2.1 assists a game as a junior and helped Butler make the state playoffs.
