CP3 crusies to 15U Gibbons championship
CP3 scored the first basket of the game and never looked back en route to a 70-53 victory over Atlanta Xpress in the 15U championship of the Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions.
CP3 was led by Tournament MVP Lavar Batts, who poured in 15 points to lead all scorers.
“We took it one game at a time,” Batts said. “We didn’t go ahead of the game. (We) took it day by day, game by game, and we played hard every day.”
CP3 also got 12 points from Reggie Davis and nine points from Hamsah Nasriildeen.
In a game that featured various runs, CP3 was able to capitalize continually on Xpress turnovers, thus leading to easy transition baskets. The CP3 lead eventually ballooned to 22 points before a late run by the Xpress that brought the deficit down to 17.
“We tried to come down here and win it all,” Batts added. “We’ve only lost one game on the season and we tried to keep that up and only have one loss.”
Admittedly, winning the MVP award meant a lot to Batts, as he solidified himself as a player to watch in the Class of 2017, not only in the South, but the nation overall.
“It means a lot,” he said. “I try to help my team where they need help. I try to be a leader out there.”
Connor Heyward paced Atlanta Xpress with 14 points in a losing effort.
