Notebook: Players shine at Senior Showcase

NORCROSS, GA – As a senior the most important things in the final months of high school are getting through school, finding a date for homecoming, the anticipated start of the basketball season to begin, a strong season, a college scholarship, going to the prom and finally graduation.

All these things come right after another in some case. Just ask any parent who has been through the process. However, here is something that is not always guaranteed, a college scholarship.

There are so many things that come into play when people start reading or hearing others offered the opportunity to play at the next level, it stresses the player and parents out. Well, there is always one last opportunity for players to showcase those skills or efforts that were not seen throughout the season.

The stage was set for members of the Class of 2014 during the Senior Showcase at Norcross High School on Sunday.

There was no effort that went unnoticed. Anyone who accepted the challenge of changing their personal athletic circumstance into a situation, in front of the 35 college coaches in attendance, may have done so.

Here are some thoughts from the notepad.

LET’S GET TO THE POINT: The one thing never missing from any camp is a guards, especially good point guards who can run a team. This camp was loaded with some quality guards who we all knew by name, while others made a name for themselves. Norcross’ Khalen Pinkett, Dacula’s Camryn Moye, McEachern’s Logan McIntosh and Valdosta’s Rashad Lewis were all selected among the top performers in camp. However, players like Johnson’s Drew Dunham, Hillgrove’s BJ Brown, Meadowcreek’s Don Smith II, Lanier’s Peyton Smith, Clarke Central’s Donovin Thompson along with the Buford’s backcourt tandem of Matt McMorris and Justin Edwards really showed the ability to run a team.

Dunham was slicing through the defense and making it easy for teammates. He just made the right decisions at the right time. Thompson was the catalyst out in Athens for Central. He has a change of pace in his game and uses angles well to elude defenders. Smith and McMorris, while they have similar games are completely different. Smith is poised at the point and hardly looked rattled against defenders. He is effective at getting the job done with the ability to hit the open jumper when necessary. McMorris has a little flash in his game but it’s part of the play. He doesn’t do it showboat, which is refreshing in this look at me world of basketball player. Smith, from Meadowcreek, is a shifty guard. He dances through the lane when looking to get to the basket.

So, if you looking for a floor general these are leaders who can get the job done.

JUST WINGING IT: Another quality about the Senior Showcase was the amount of wing players available.

Woodward Academy’s Trey Williams is a player with a strong IQ for the game and understand how to utilize his body. The 6-foot-4 forward has a good jumper and is a monster on the boards for a player in his position. Clarke Central’s Leroy Legett is a 6-foot-3 wing was relentless on both ends of the floor. He is competitor with a strong knack for being around the basketball. Roswell’s Anthony Hudson is a strong physical player with a good touch around the basket. Capable of being a solid get this late in the process.

All season at Norcross, AJ Farrar has shown the ability to be one of the most athletic players in the 2014 class. He did not disappoint running the floor, knocking down jumper and slamming home putbacks. Wheeler’s Trevin Steede played with a chip on his shoulder making shots and crashing the boards. Columbia’s Khalil Haynes showed is naturally athleticism and some offensive skills in the open court a few times throughout camp. Johnson’s James Hodges is a wing player with post player instincts. He will an automatic double double guy.
