#MarchToMacon: Warriors win Class A championship
MACON, GA – The championship trophy may be going back to Wilkinson County for the second straight season and the seventh time in Dr. Aaron Geter, Jr.'s 16 years at the helm of the Irwinton school.
This year's trophy may have some bumps and bruises in it though. Despite going into the fourth quarter with an 11-point lead, Wilkinson County watched Turner County stay in the game and kept it close down the stretch. Turner County took advantage of ill-advised shots, careless turnovers and mental mistakes. Wilkinson County held on when it mattered and kept the composure to hold up the silver hardware on Thursday night. - JY
Shooting in general failed Turner County. The Rebels were one of 19 from three in the fourth quarter and shot less than 50 percent from the foul line all game long. TCHS came within two points with less than 10 seconds to play but could never get over the hump despite having multiple opportunities to steal the championship away from Wilkinson County. - JY
Time and score is something coaches talk about all the time. The Rebels made two mistakes in the process of the ball game. Late in the first half, Turner County had a chance to score late but just held the ball as time expired. Then in the second half, the Rebels looking to stop the clock by fouling late were called for an intentional foul. This was the end as Wilkinson County nailed the four free throws to seal the game. - RA
Torrico Simmons showed plenty of poise. The junior point guard was constantly being shadowed by someone on Turner County but did not get overly frustrated. He just continued to play and get everyone else involved. This was impressive for a player getting that much attention and accustomed to scoring more than 20 points a game. - RA
Free throws nearly killed Wilkinson County’s chances. The Warriors were 19-for-31 from the charity stripe. It was not until Torrico Simmons nailed the final four in the final minute of the game did the Warriors have a chance to exhale. - RA
