Schools chasing Johnson, he's chasing a title

National Signing Day is Wednesday and thousands of high school football seniors will put a pen to a paper and contractually connect themselves to a college or university of their choice. Many basketball coaches were wondering if two-sport prospect Cameron Johnson of Athens (Ga.) Clarke Central would be one of them.

The 6-foot-4 quarterback/shooting guard entered his senior season as a young man that would have options.

To be clear, though, Johnson has already made an important decision regarding his future as a collegiate athlete.

"There's a lot more interest coming in basketball," Johnson said. "That's the route I'm looking to take."

Enter the floodgates for college basketball recruiters. Johnson is having as good of a senior season of any available player there is in the Peach State. He's averaging 21.9 points 8.8 rebounds, 3 steals and 2.7 assists a game for Clarke Central  (21-1).

Johnson said he's heard from Furman, Rice, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Western Kentucky, Jacksonville, Florida Atlantic, Gardner-Webb, Tennessee, Tennessee Martin, Rhode Island, Florida Gulf Coast, College of Charleston, Radford, South Alabama and others over the course of the season.

The No. 10 ranked senior in Georgia has options. Plenty of them. The questions are far less concerned with the who but more centered around when. Johnson said he thinks about his next step regarding his future quite often.

"I've gone through the recruiting process at least a dozen and a half times in my head every day and night. I look them up. I imagine myself being there. I can think of myself wearing their jerseys," Johnson said.

"There have been some new schools recruiting me but I've mentally narrowed them down at least to five schools at least five different times with new teams each time. So, after (the season is over), I intend to take all five visits. On paper, they all sound great so visiting them is going to be so important."

Until then, the door remains open. And, truth be told, the focus for Johnson is on the hardwood. A trip to Macon for the state championship is the goal. Why shouldn't it be? He, along with six other senior teammates, have been playing sports together before they could even tie their shoes.

"We go back since I was four-years-old. We go back to playing little league football together," Johnson said.

That familiarity has allowed the team to enjoy the ride they are currently on. Clarke Central is the No. 13 overall ranked team in Georgia and a contender for state in the AAAAA classification.

"We've been talking about having the fire since my freshman year. We were tossed into it and we know what competition looks like," Johnson said. "We've seen every possible situation there is over time. We've been through it all. Just to know each other for so long, there is no unfamiliarity there. There is no sugar-coating with us. We're like brothers.

"Our confidence level is very high right now. That has nothing to do with our record or how we are even playing right now. Every time we step into our practice, it is just that practice or just that drill that matters at that moment for you to get better at your craft.

"We are constantly being reminded that we were not always this good. We were not always a top team. It took a lot of hard work in the weight room, off the court when we weren't in the season and, as they say, just taking it one game at a time. My confidence level is super high because I know it is a chance to get better because it is a new day."
