Pebblebrook advances to Elite Eight

MABLETON, GA -- Pebblebrook junior point guard Ty Hudson started the state playoff game against Brunswick like he was in a three-point shooting contest.

Bang. Bang. Bang. Just like that, the 6-foot-1 floor general was off to a hot start and coupled the triples with two other baskets. Hudson scored 13 quick points as Pebblebrook was up 17-4 just like that and the Falcons never relented, beating the Pirates 70-54 to move onto the quarterfinals of the AAAAAA state playoffs.

Hudson finished with 17 points, eight rebounds and eight assists in the win. The junior, once again, set the tone for the Falcons as never relented the pressure.

Brunswick, coming off the heels of a first round win over powerhouse Westlake, the Pirates were brimming with confidence. But the opening flurry was too much to maintain.

"Our plan was to come out early hard and pressing," said Pebblebrook head coach George Washington. "We knew they were coming in on a long bus ride so they could have tired legs. If we could jump on them early, we could expose some of their depth. Looking at their depth, they only go six or seven guys. We figured if we were effective early, we'd certainly be effective late."

Brunswick struggled to find a rhythm all game. The Pirates had a much better second half after going into halftime down by 19 points. But Pebblebrook always seemed to have an answer.

"That's why we kept our foot on the pedal and didn't let them get going all night," Hudson said.

Pebblebrook big man Derek Ogbeide had a major impact on the game as the long-armed junior protected the rim with great purpose. He changed the course of numerous Brunswick shots. Defensively, he was a major factor and limited the Davis brothers - Mike and Roger - from scoring around the cup.

"We've been pressing upon him all year to alter shots," Washington said of Ogbeide. "If he blocks it, he may not be able to get it back. If he alters the shots, we can rebound them. We got those shots back and then got out onto the other end."

Pebblebrook had important production from Chris Nelson and Demarre Alexander providing big minutes and big buckets in the second half. Junior forward Kevin Murph was great on the glass, collecting nine rebounds.

The team's starting lineup is all juniors. As freshmen, the team won just four games. Last year, the team was bounced early out of the Region 4-AAAAAA tournament by Hilgrove, missing out on the post-season. The team won the region tournament and has advanced to the Elite Eight for the first time since 2007.

"Everything has changed behind us. We have people behind us now," Hudson said. "If we win, our entire school wins. They come out and support us every night."

Pebblebrook will now play at Luella on Thursday night in the AAAAAA state tournament.
