Tough defense helps Jenkins top Liberty County
SAVANNAH, GA - The recipe for Jenkins was quite simple against Liberty County - play physical and make perimeter shots. That's exactly what the Warriors did in a body-bruising region game on Saturday night as Jenkins won 49-38.
Senior guard Jamelle Lanier scored 16 points and hit four three-pointers to help pace the No. 20 Power Poll team claim victory number 18 on the season.
Lanier's perimeter offense was the insurance needed to help Jenkins sustain any Liberty County comeback.
"It was important. We needed it," Lanier said. "I felt like I stepped up and made big shots. Three-point shots can bring us to some faraway places."
Jenkins senior power forward Quasean Harris was the toughest dude on the court and played the role of enforcer for the home team. The referees didn't call a lot of fouls in the match-up and a physical game played into the hands of Harris.
"I have to be physical with them. I couldn't let them grab every rebound and win the box out. I just gotta do the same thing with them," Harris said. "If that means beating them up a little, that's what I was going to do."
Defensively, 38 points is the second lowest point total allowed this season by Jenkins. Harris had a lot to do with it.
"We played okay, I guess. Our defense could have been way better than what it was," Harris said. "We played pretty well."
Harris is being humble.
"His energy really helped us a lot. He has the energy that never stops. It's like he never gets tired," Lanier said.
Senior point guard Brenden Carter showed some serious heart when he returned to the game after turning his ankle in the first half. He scored eight points in the third quarter and took the game from a two-point margin to a 40-28 lead after three quarters of play.
Jenkins is rolling right now and doesn't look like the train is slowing down any time soon.
"We have to keep playing defense, rebounding and staying together as a team," Lainer said. "Defense can take us a long ways."
Hard to argue with that.
