Mitchell's three-pointer gets Eagles a victory
LAWRENCEVILLE, GA - Mitchell and Mitchell has a nice ring to it if it was a law firm. The combination on Collins Hill boy’s basketball team has a much tighter relationship.
Trailing by a basket with 25 seconds to play, Devin Mitchell had the ball at the top of the key. Normally, the Alabama signee is the gearing up to take the last shot. He drove to the basket and everyone on Peachtree Ridge reacted leaving his younger brother open in the corner.
Jalen Mitchell’s 3-pointer sliced through the net before the Eagles’ held on for a 49-46 win over the Lions on Friday.
“We have been playing all our lives together,” Jalen said. “I knew I had to come up big. I have been practicing for this game all week.”
Everyone wearing Collins Hill colors exploded with excitement.
“Jalen has those nerves that don’t bother him.,” Eagles’ coach Eric Nathan said. “When Devin drove all that help (defense) was coming. He is so good at finding the open man. It was a great look.”
The junior stepped it up for the Eagles (9-9, 6-3 7-AAAAAA). He finished with a career-high 24 points, including 4-for-7 from three-point range and six rebounds. Normally, all the scoring is left up to his older brother but after hitting the game-winner, the siblings shared a hug at mid-court before Jalen nailed a pair of free throws.
“He just said, ‘That’s my brother, and keep on playing like this,’” Jalen said.
Collins Hill is on a three-game winning streak and more importantly positioning itself for the region tournament. The Eagles hold a one-game lead over Peachtree (9-10, 6-4) for fourth-place. Tuesday Collins Hill travels to Duluth for another tough region matchup.
Devin Mitchell finished with 15 points, six assists and seven rebounds.
“This gives us a lot of momentum going into another tough game,” Nathan said. “What I hope we can take with this is that it shows we can play with the best.”
Peachtree Ridge made its run late in the third quarter as Aaron Augustin led the charge. The sophomore guard scored a game-high 14 points. Senior Amir Warnock had 11 points and 10 rebounds. Milz Tatum had nine points and Brandon Hopson added eight.
“The kid hit the shot,” Ridge coach Keith Arrington said. “(Jalen) hit a big shot when it counted.”
