Meet Devontae Cacok
ALPHARETTA, GA - The term sleeper rarely lives up to the billing in today's age of instant information. So when a guy like Devontae Cacok comes around and scores 26 points and grabs 16 rebounds in a rivalry game, it is easy to get excited.
A quick Google search of the 6-foot-6 bouncy junior from Alpharetta High School yields a few YouTube clips but little else. Ask the Atlanta hoopheads about him and few notes come back. That's perfectly okay. Cacok earned the attention the old fashioned way, the right way, by doing it on the court.
Right from the start, Cacok went to work against down-the-street rival Chattahoochee by playing well above the rim and grabbing tough defensive rebounds. He played a major role in his team's 75-70 win. Cacok had the gym roaring with his athleticism. Eight of 10 made field goals were dunks. He was the beneficiary of good guard play.
Dunks will come for a player of his size and ability. What was the most impressive was his rebounds in traffic.
"Defensive rebounds are big for us," Cacok said after his team's win on Friday night. "We can't give up second chance buckets. If we do that, we're not going to be a very good team. We work on it in practice and limit other team's chances."
Chattahoochee made a nice run, thanks in large part to an out-of-this-world performance from junior Marcus Sheffield. The stud junior poured in 36 points, 12 rebounds, eight assists and six steals in the defeat. Cacok's rebounding and presence in the paint limited the rest of the Chattahoochee attack.
"We had a stretch were we had a lot of turnovers and we didn't make the plays we needed to. They took advantage of our mistakes," Cacok said. "It took some time for us to figure it out and once we worked together, we worked it out."
The question still remains - who is this Cacok kid? He smiled when asked that same question, shrugging his shoulders and deflected the attention that flocked to him outside the Raiders locker room.
"I'm kind of an underneath kind of player," Cacok said humbly. "I don't think too many people know much about me."
They do now. He made people pay attention. Cacok moved to Alpharetta at the start of the year after playing two years at Drew High School in Riverdale. Now in his third year of organized basketball, Cacok said he's still trying to fine tune his skill set.
"(People) can expect me to always play hard. I'm going to always leave it out there on the floor," he said. "I work as hard as I can on my game every day. I work every day in practice and just try to get better at basketball."
A few colleges have caught wind of his game. Cacok said Wyoming has reached out while George Mason has made a couple of calls into the school about him.
"I've talked to a few colleges but not that many," Cacok said.
That will change because he's making people take notice.
