Five Games to Watch This Week

Region play is now in full force in Georgia high school hoops and some of the top teams in some of the top regions go head-to-head. Here are the five games we think you need to see this week around the Peach State.

Tuesday, Jan. 7 *Note: These games will likely move to Wednesday due to the school cancellations due to weather.

No. 15 Douglas County at No. 5 Westlake 7:30 p.m.
The two teams take to the floor in the first 3-AAAAAA game of the year and this one should be a dandy. The Interstate 20 rivalry will have a lot of talenton the court as Westlake is senior-heavy while Douglas County has a number of talented young players on the roster. Keep an eye on Tyler Williams (Westlake) vs. Justin Bridges (Douglas County).

St. Pius X at Woodward Academy 7:30 p.m.
Region 6-AAA has a lot of talent in it and this one shouldn't disappoint. St. Pius X is 14-1 on the year and coming off an exciting win over Milton. Woodward has won nine games and boast a number of talented prospects.

Friday, Jan. 10

No. 2 Wheeler at Cherokee 7 p.m.
Cherokee beat Wheeler last year and the Wildcats certainly haven't forgotten. Problem is, though, this is the best CHS team since Chris Singleton wore the white and red. Cherokee is one of the best defensive teams in the state, too. Head coaches Roger Kvam (Cherokee) and Doug Lipscomb (Wheeler) have been trading wits for the last two decades. Wheeler will be looking to ready for the adverse road game. How will the state's best starting five hold up? Welcome to region play in Georgia.

Walton at Milton 7 p.m.
When these two teams match-up, you can expect fireworks. Both teams enter Region 5-AAAAAA play undefeated and this game will serve as the first of many separating match-ups between region foes. Milton is surging right now while Walton will face the biggest in-state test of the year.

Valdosta at No. No. 19 Brunswick 7 p.m.
Region 1-AAAAAA is shaping up to be one of the best in all of Georgia. Why? Because both teams already have 10 wins on the year. Brunswick won the series 2-1 last year. Both clubs are JR/SR heavy, too. Expect this one to be a back and forth battle.
