Top performers from Nike Explosion

The 2013 Nike Explosion was a nice four-game slate at Wheeler High School. The event provided on-lookers with a peek at some of the best talent in the Southeast. Our staff picked the event MVP and the five top performers.

Jaylen Brown, SF, Wheeler, 2015 - After scoring 22 points, grabbing 13 rebounds, handing out two assists, blocking four shots and rounding up two steals in a 63-52 win over Miller Grove, it was easy to crown the top junior in Georgia as the MVP of the Nike Explosion event. Brown had a hand in nearly every possession of the game. He had total control in this game and was locked in right from the tip. He wanted this win and competed like it. This was a big-time performance

Elijah Staley, PF, Wheeler, 2014 - On the first play of the game, the future Mississippi State two-sport star slammed home the opening points of the game. Staley finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds in the win. He was a disrupting presence on the defensive end and shined in transition, the Achilles' heel in Miller Grove's defeat. Staley seemed to always have an energy starting play. He ended the first half with a bang and made some big plays in the back-and-forth final quarter. Top to bottom, Staley was terrific.

Justin Coleman, SG/PG, Wenonah, 2014 - The future Alabama guard quietly made his presence felt against Norcross but when the second half hit, the baby-faced scorer went to work. Coleman scored 22 points in the third quarter and put the lead into Wenonah's hands. It was an impressive feat as he pulled up from deep time and time again and knocked down six three-pointers. The amazing thing about Coleman's effort was control. Coleman finished with a day high 41 points and earned a new community of fans.

Alterique Gilbert, PG, Miller Grove, 2016 - It really shouldn't come as a big surprise that Gilbert made this list. He's been one of the best guards in all of Georgia this season. The sophomore point guard scored 21 points in the defeat and his eight points in the fourth quarter helped rally the Wolverines  but it wasn't enough. Nevertheless, Gilbert was big on a big stage. He found ways to score over the top of the towering Wheeler frontline. His floater is a special offensive trait.

Amir Warnock, C, Peachtree Ridge, 2014 - Warnock was great on the glass and played with a sense of urgency throughout the back-and-forth game. This was his signature game of the young season. The Jacksonville bound big man was nine of 11 from the floor and finished with 19 points. He won the battle against one of the state's most aggressive and fearless teams. Really good effort from the Gwinnett County post.

Tim Rowe, C, Berkmar, 2014 - Georgia's top unsigned senior played very well against an undermanned Collins Hill team in the opening game of the Nike Explosion. Rowe scored 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds. The 6-foot-10 center attacked the glass and was the beneficiary of a post-centered Berkmar attack.
