Seventh Woods delivers

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- The traffic was backed up in front of Richland Northeast High School so bad that it rivaled shopping malls this time of year. The Chick-Fil-A Classic was going on and the locals knew where to go to find some of the best high school basketball talent in the country.

The people fought through the back-up and eventually found a spot in the grass and made parking spots wherever they could. The line, 500 people deep sometimes, bought tickets and made their way into the gym.

It was time to see sophomore sensation Seventh Woods. The South Carolina native and his Hammond School teammates took to the court against Dreher, a pairing of two of Columbia's best high school teams.

One problem though for the people that wanted to see the match-up - the game was sold out. According to law enforcement, 500 people were left waiting outside. They couldn't see the match-up because the fire code would have been violated.

They could hear the game though.

Woods threw down a thunderous dunk that was so emphatic that even the mixtape guys went scurrying to their computers to upload the dunk as fast as humanly possible.

The crowd erupted so loud that the main gym could hear the cheers throughout. So did the fans that couldn't get into the small back gym.

"Well, I guess they missed out," Woods said humbly. "I'm just bless to be a in a position where people want to see my team play."

The play almost served as a sixth man for Hammonds. The energy was on the side of the kids in red all game long. Dreher could never fully responded to the play. Hammond won 60-44. But the talk after the game was all about that dunk.

"You don't see that everyday," Hammond junior Xavier McDaniel said. "We wanted to keep the ball out of their hands so when we had a shot we took it. When we didn't, we just circled back and ran a play again."

Collectively, it was a nice win for Hammonds. Woods was terrific above the rim, as a shooter and as a decision-maker. It will be tough to match his wow moments all weekend here for the Chick-Fil-A Classic.

McDaniel scored 19 points and showed why Winthrop, South Carolina, Clemson Baylor and South Florida are showing early interest.

Dreher was paced by junior guard Deandre Nathaniel, who scored 14 of his team high 19 points in the second half.

For the record, Hammond plays in the auxiliary gym again on Saturday at 7:30 against Athens Christian (Ga.).

Get there early.
