Columbia overcomes mistakes to beat Pirates

Fouls and turnovers are some of the things Columbia boys basketball team is dealing with early this season.

While these are a concern from the Eagles they are still winning. Columbia beat Stone Mountain 61-45 on Friday night. Through four games the Eagles are still undefeated.

“We are making some mistakes,” Columbia coach Kerry Sandifer said. “We are trying to find out what kind of team we are.”

The Eagles, who entered the week ranked No. 12 in the Hoopseen.com Power Poll, looked like they would run away with the game. Columbia was then plagued by its inability to protect the basketball or score.

Stone Mountain made the game ugly. The Pirates forced the Eagles into some careless mistakes, which led to transition baskets. Columbia was also dealing with several players in foul trouble. For a split second, Stone Mountain looked like it would have an opportunity to cut into the Eagles lead.

This is when Columbia’s Nick Singleton took over. The senior forward is an effective player in the open floor and the sloppy play helped him get off. Singleton attacked the basket and sliced to the rim with purpose. He finished with a game-high 26 points. Bryce Brown chipped in with 16.

“We have been telling him to go out and score,” said Sandifer of Singleton. “He is an open court style player.”

Stone Mountain tried to get back in the game but it was unable to get anything going on their end of the floor. Chris Jones finished with 15 points, while Marquez Hinson added 14.

These Eagles are looking to clean up some of their game miscues. They have managed to escape with wins despite having a plethora of turnovers.

“If after 10 ball games and we are still making the same mistakes it will be a big concern,” Sandifer said. “The biggest thing is we have only played four games. We have to make progress as we continue to play games.”
