Warnock finds home in Jacksonville

Amir Warnock was in no rush to make a college decision. However, he wanted to make sure he found one that felt like home for him.

The Peachtree Ridge High senior only needed two official visits to find a home. He committed to Jacksonville University on Monday night.

“I loved it,” he said. “The campus, the great environment and the team being dedicated to basketball is what I liked.”

It was Warnock’s second official visit but it was all he needed. He picked the Dolphins over Savannah State, Winthrop, Gardner Webb and Coastal Carolina.

Being on the Florida campus gave Warnock comfort.

“It’s in a great location,” he said. “I bonded with coach (Cliff) Warren. I know he has my best interest at heart.”

Warnock understands the basketball influence Warren will have on him will be impactful because of the coach’s experience in working with other players his size. However, the 6-foot-8 center was impressed with the Warren’s graduation rate. Warren mentioned graduating every senior that has played for him, a stat that stood out for Warnock.

“He’s like you are coming here to play basketball but you are going to get your degree while you are here,” Warnock said. “He’s going to look out for me, take care of me and push me hard.”

While Warren was a bond built throughout this recruiting process, Warnock had a strong relationship with assistant coach Winston Neal. The Dolphins assistant has known Warnock since he was a sophomore and that was important for him.

The relationship made things easier for Warnock. He spoke with Neal and Warren on Sunday night and pretty much told the coaches he would be a Dolphin.

Now, with National Signing Day on Wednesday and the season on the horizon, Warnock is ready to push the Lions toward their goals.

“We have a young team of guys,” he said. “I want to help lead them to a state championship.”
